The goal of this article is to review some aspects of brain anatomy and neurophysiology that are important for consciousness, and which hopefully may be of benefit to philosophers investigating the conscious mind. Taking as an initial point of reference the distinction between “the hard problem” and “the weak problems” of consciousness, we shall concentrate on questions pertaining to the second of these. A putative “consciousness system” in the brain will be presented, paying special attention to diffuse projection systems. The (...) “center of gravity” will be brain connectivity, since consciousness must, critically, be dependent on coherent activity and timing. “Detectors” of synchronicity and coincidence, like NMDA receptors, also necessarily play a role here. To be conscious, we do not need an entire brain. While even large hemispherectomies need not unequivocally affect consciousness, far smaller brain-stem lesions may be devastating in this regard. Even so, the recent discovery by Matthew F. Glasser et al. of 180 separate areas in the human brain cortex is intriguing from a teleological perspective, as it is quite unthinkable that any of them could be “redundant. (shrink)

After the unexpected death of Professor Józef Kałuża at the age of 74 on the 26th of July 2003, not only Polish neuropathology but also Polish philosophy of medical investigations lost one of its most renowned minds. Beginning in 1949, Professor Kałuża studied medical sciences for five years at the Medical Faculty of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. He did his Ph.D. thesis in neuropathology in the Department of Neuropathology of the Polish Academy of Science. In 1962 he received (...) a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship and spent one year at the National Institutes of Health. In 1981 Professor Kaluza was promoted to a tenured professorship in neuropathology. In the article author analyses the extent to which it is possible to regard the Aristotelian conception of the soul as actually necessary and applicable for modern neuroscience. The framework in which this objective is going to be accomplished is provided by the idea of the coexistence of the “manifest” and “scientific” images of the world and persons, as introduced by Wilfrid Sellars. In subsequent sections, author initially formulates an answer to the questions of what it is that Aristotle sought (...) to explain with his conception of soul as formal cause, and how this notion could be portrayed in terms drawn from contemporary neurological science. It is author’s intention to show that no other concepts—be they the Cartesian “mind” or a Chalmers-style “self”—come anywhere close to matching the breadth of scope of Aristotelian “soul”. At the same time, though, analysis carried out here do not intend to undertake any kind of defence of the soul as a spiritual entity of the sort popular where religious faith is concerned, namely as an entity separable from the body, immortal, and inimitably tied to God. Then, in the second major part of the article, author analyses the extent to which the Aristotelian conception of the soul can be thought of as involving criteria of the sort that we encounter in the contemporary theory of strong emergence. According to the author the theory of strong emergence has, as a heuristic theory, quite general predictive and explanatory power as regards the field of human thought and behaviour. (shrink)

In this paper we discuss the views on the Turing test of four influential thinkers who belong to the tradition of analytic philosophy: Ludwig Wittgenstein, Noam Chomsky, Hilary Putnam and John Searle. Based on various beliefs about philosophical and/or linguistic matters, they arrive at different assessments of both the significance and suitability of the imitation game for the development of cognitive science and AI models. Nevertheless, they share a rejection of the idea that one can treat Turing test as a (...) test for “machine thinking.” This seems to stem from a concern for the proper use of language —one that is a fundamental methodological commitment of analytic philosophy. In this article I explore some implications of the correspondence that went on between Ludwig Wittgenstein and the logician and mathematician Gottlob Frege. Part of this exchange was focused on the envisaged publication of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, and on the philosophical or literary character of that work. The problem discussed concerned the question of whether the Tractatus should be seen not as a scientific but as an artistic achievement. My first goal is to present what, given Frege’s writings, his phrase (...) “an artistic rather than a scientific achievement” could be understood to mean in terms of the Tractatus itself. Secondly, I seek to determine the extent to which traces of Frege’s understanding of such terms as “mock thoughts,” “fiction,” “elucidation,” “paintings” and “colouring” are to be found in the language of the Tractatus. This should then make it possible to show how Wittgenstein’s work, viewed from a Fregean perspective, can be seen as furnishing a logic and semantics not only for the languages of logic and natural science, but also for something that is “an artistic rather than a scientific achievement”, while also indicating that the content of the Tractatus as a whole could not have been captured independently of the unified form Wittgenstein himself gave it. Ignatow stawia sobie za cel dokładny rekonstrukcję ścisłego związku zachodzącego pomiędzy marksistowską antropologią - w pierwotnym kształcie prezentujący radykalny humanizm - a upadkiem komunizmu. W krótkim przeglądzie historycznymi stwierdza, iż zsekularyzowany humanizm marksistowski wyrósł z tradycji filozoficznej, reprezentowanej przez Herdera i Feuerbacha, czyniąc - podobnie jak oni – człowieka najważniejszą i najogólniejszą zasady metafizyczny. Dalszy rozwój filozofii marksistowskiej doprowadził najpierw do odrzucenia tej tezy, później zaś - przede wszystkim w leninowsko-stalinowskiej wersji marksizmu - do ideologizacji klasy proletariatu, a tym samym (...) do jednoznacznej negacji tradycyjnego humanizmu. The article reviews the book Byt i sens. Księga Pamiątkowa VII Polskiego Zjazdu Filozoficznego w Szczecinie, 14–18 września 2004 roku, edited by Renata Ziemińska and Ireneusz Ziemiński.

Dan Lloyd jest profesorem filozofii w Trinity College. Tytuł i motto omawianej książki nawiązuje do wiersza Allena Ginsberga „Skowyt" [„Widziałem najwspanialsze umysły mego pokolenia, zniszczone obłędem,... którzy ukończyli uniwersytety chłodnym promiennym okiem..." ]. Książka Radiant Cool jest napisana prostym językiem, chociaż pojawia się w niej wiele neurofenomenologicznego „żargonu", co może zniechęcać do dalszej lektury. Książka dostarcza dobrego wprowadzenia do fenomenologii Husserla i do debat obecnych we współczesnej, angloamerykańskiej filozofii świadomości, odwołujących się do wyników badan neurologicznych. Można ją polecić studentom filozofii, (...) psychologii oraz neurologii. Wprowadzający charakter książki podkreślają liczne schematy, wytłuszczenia, wcięcia tekstu, tabelki itp., mające unaocznić główne toki rozumowania. Cechy ujemny takich schematów i rysunków jest to, ze równocześnie zawyżają one pole rozumienia i sprawiają wrażenie, że tak naprawdę, to problem świadomości już został rozwiązany. Dlatego podczas czytania Radiant Cool należy ciągle pamiętać, że tezy Lloyda są z założenia „optymistyczne" i mają informacyjno-komercyjny charakter. (shrink)

A characterization of two aspects of consciousness, phenomenal consciousness and access consciousness, enables us to ask whether effect anticipations need be accessible to consciousness, or whether they can also have an effect on conscious control at an unconscious stage. A review of empirical studies points to the fact that (...) willed actions are influenced by effect anticipations both when they are conscious and when they remain inaccessible to the conscious mind. This suggests that the effects of conscious voluntary actions—in line with the ideomotor principle proposed by William James—are anticipated during the generation of responses. I propose that the integration of perceptual and motor codes arises during action planning. The features of anticipated effects appear to be optionally connected with the features of the actions selected to bring about these effects in the world. (shrink)

Elements... is a collection of seventeen, rather informal talks closely dependent on the aristotelian and thomist metaphysical setting. The author explicitly disregards a historical approach to the subject and in an essentially systematic way tries to argue in favor of a metaphysically pluralist and epistemologically optimist - realist solution. These two options constitute, therefore, the specific limits of the textbook.

W czasie podstawowego kursu filozofii Lonergan studiował matematykę, co wywarło wpływ nie tylko na jego ogólne spojrzenie na filozofię i teologię, lecz także na rozumienie ich naukowych metod. Podstawowe dzieło Lonergana Insight było początkowo zaplanowane jako praca z zakresu metodologii teologicznej. W głównej mierze znajdujemy w niej filozoficzne studium nad ludzkim rozumowaniem: co właściwie czynię, gdy poznaję? O ile w (...) Insight poznanie jest zasadniczo rozumiane jako czynność ścisłe intelektualna, o tyle w następnej kluczowej książce Method in Theology Lonergan odwojuje się także do odczuć, traktując je jako intencjonalne odpowiedzi na wartości. Wittgensteina pod koniec życia Bemerkungen über die Farben znajdujemy kilka 'zagadek' dotyczących kolorów, np.: 1. „Jak to się dzieje, że coś przezroczystego może być zielone, ale nie może być białe". 2. „niepodobna sobie wyobrazić czystą białą wodę". 3. „Ale kolor świeci za sprawą swego otoczenia, w swym otoczeniu. Szary jednak nie świeci. 4. „? W obrazie biel musi być najjaśniejszym kolorem". „Nieprawda, że w obrazie biel zawsze musi być najjaśniejszym kolorem. Z pewnością jednak jest nim w (...) płaskiej kombinacji plam barwnych". 5. „Dlaczego nie ma brązowego światła ani szarego?" „Dlaczego niepodobna sobie wyobrazić szarego żaru". 6. „Czyż nie mogliby istnieć ludzie, dla których istnieje niebieskawy żółty, czerwonawy zielony? One of the reasons for organizing the above-mentioned conversation was the publication of Urszula Zegleń's book Philosophy of Mind. Urszula Zegleń is a profesor of philosophy at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. The one-day conversation had three parts and each part consisted of two speeches. After each speech there was a short but very active discussion on the respective topics.

Na pytanie o rozumienie pojecia przyrody udzielano w historii filozofii różnych odpowiedzi. W książce Mutschlera możemy znaleźć obszerny przegląd współczesnego rozumienia tego pojecia. Zasadniczy przełom w poglądach na przyrodę dokonał się na początku XVII wieku, kiedy to przy jej badaniu zaczęto się odwoływać do powtarzalnych eksperymentów, do metod ilościowych oraz do matematyki. Przykładem takiego postępowania jest metoda zaproponowana przez Galileusza, dla którego „księga przyrody" jest napisana w języku matematyki. Przed Galileuszem nikt nie wpadł na pomysł, zęby przyrody traktować jako księgę (...) napisaną w języku matematyki. Zwrotu „księga przyrody" lub „księga natury" używano już w średniowieczu i przeciwstawiano „księdze objawienia". Tego rodzaju przeciwstawienie odpowiadało równocześnie podziałowi na to, co „naturalne" i na to, co „ponadnaturalne". (shrink)

Na uwagę zasługuje to, że omawiane wydanie ukazało się w renomowanym wydawnictwie Hacketta. Wydanie pierwsze zainteresowało raczej akademickie kręgi filozofów i psychologów. Rosenberg jest profesorem filozofii analitycznej w Uniwersytecie North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Z jego bibliografii obejmującej kilkadziesiąt pozycji na szczególną uwagę zasługują książki: Linguistic Representation, One World and our Knowledge of It, The (...) Der Schwerpunkt der wissenschaftlichen Forschung von Krzysztof Stachewicz liegt im Bereich der thomistischen und fenomenologischen Ethik. Das vorliegende Buch spiegelt diesen Interessenkreis des Autors wieder und es stellt zwei, auf den ersten Blick weit auseinander liegende Auffassungen über Ethik und Moral kritisch gegenüber: die Theorie des Naturrechts und die klassische Wertethik. Die beiden bilden zugleich zwei führende Traditionen, wenn es um die Begründung der Moral geht. Die Ethik des Naturrechts gründet in einer objektiven Ordnung und stützt die Moral auf die (...) - wie der Autor es nennt - Seinsgrundlage. Die klassische Wertethik geht bei der Begründung von einer subjektiven Basis aus und konzentriert sich auf die Analysen des Subiektes. Die erste Auffassung der Ethik ist ihres Wesens nach naturalistisch, die zweite intuitionistisch. (shrink)

Stanisław Janeczek beschäftigt sich beruflich mit der Geschichte der neuzeitlichen Philosophie und der Geschichte der Erziehung mit dem Schwerpunkt polnische Philosophie, vor allem die der Neuzeit. Der direkte Anlaß zur Entstehung des vorliegenden, enorm umfangreichen Buches war die geschichtliche Untersuchung des Logik-Unterrichts, wie er im Schul- und Studienprogram der Kommission für Nationale Erziehung vorgesehen wurde. Die Kommission hat den Logikunterricht in den Gymnasien auf die Praxis bezogen und ihn aus den Hochschulen gestrichen. Dieselben Maßnahmen haben den ganzen Philosophieunterricht betroffen. Das (...) besprochene Buch soll dem Autor zufolge eine bisherige Lücke schließen und auf eine systematische Weise den Gesamtunterricht der Philosophie in den der genannten Kommission unterstellten Schulen darstellen. Als Hintergrund des wissenschaftlichen Unternehmens dient die Darstellung des damaligen Philosophie-Unterrichts in den anderen europäischen Ländern und auch die geschichtliche Entwicklung der philosophischen Ideen. The article reviews the book Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature Is Almost Certainly False, by Thomas Nagel.

In cases where one sense-modality is stimulated by another, we speak of synesthesia, i.e., of a subjective experience of multiple distinct sensations as being quite literally conjoined. The term “synesthesia” is derived indirectly from the Greek words “syn,” meaning “together,” and “aisthesis,” meaning “sensation.” This article focuses on the question of whether synesthesia is in fact a mental disorder or a creative gift. Both the commonsense views that have emerged in recent times, and neurological research, demonstrate that our knowledge of (...) this relatively uncommon phenomenon is slowly but constantly expanding. Proper experimental research conducted with the right sorts of synesthete, and philosophically and scientifically nuanced conceptual studies of synesthesia, can all be helpful when seeking answers to the question posed above, while also confirming general claims about the extent to which our perceptions are reallysubjective. Most synesthetes see themselves as gifted, and claim that this “conjoining of the senses” enriches the quality of their lives. (shrink)

Znane z Traktatu wypowiedzi na temat „Ja" i „świata": „świat jest moim światem", „Sam jestem swoim światem", czy tez „Świat i życie to jedno", są istotne dla zrozumienia kwestii solipsyzmu, omawianych przez „wczesnego" Wittgensteina. Pod „solipsyzm" rozumie się zazwyczaj krańcową formę subiektywnego idealizmu głoszącego, że istnieje tylko Ja sam, a wszystko inne jest moim wyobrażeniem. Solipsysta uznaje, ze jego własna subiektywność jest czymś jedynie możliwym do poznania, co oznacza doprowadzenie idealizmu do subiektywnej skrajności: wszystko co nam się ukazuje, jest traktowane (...) jako coś wyobrażonego. Pytanie o solipsyzm pojawia się w dzisiejszych analizach subiektywności świadomości. Solipsysta neguje chociażby możliwość ustalenia, czy jakiś inny podmiot są siebie świadome. Rzeczywistość obcych stanów świadomości jest przez solipsysta ignorowana, gdyż wychodząc z istnienia własnej świadomości, może on jedynie przez analogię wnioskować o istnieniu obcych stanów świadomości. W argumentacjach przeciwko solipsyzmowi podkreśla się, ze stanowisko to wikła się w sprzeczność, gdyż w celu sformułowania swoich własnych też musi używać języka, co z kolei zakłada obecność intersubiektywnego świata, którego istnienie neguje.
