This paper concerns the formal semantic analysis of imperative sentences. It is argued that such an analysis cannot be deferred to the semantics of propositions, under any of the three commonly adopted strategies: the performative analysis, the sentence radical approach to propositions, and the (nondeclarative) mood-as-operator approach. Whereas the first two are conceptually problematic, the third faces empirical problems: various complex imperatives should be analysed in terms of semantic operators over simple imperatives. One particularly striking case is the Dutch pluperfect (...) imperative. It is argued that this construction should be analysed as a genuine counterfactual imperative. On the constructive side, in the last part of the paper a formal semantic analysis of imperatives is presented, in the framework of Update Semantics. On this analysis, imperatives are sui generis semantic entities, on a par with propositions. The analysis also includes an account of the counterfactual imperatives. (shrink)

Deontic logic is standardly conceived as the logic of true statements about the existence of obligations and permissions. In his last writings on the subject, G. H. von Wright criticized this view of deontic logic, stressing the rationality of norm imposition as the proper foundation of deontic logic. The present paper is an attempt to advance such an account of deontic logic using the formal apparatus of update semantics and dynamic logic. That is, we first define norm systems and a (...) semantics of norm performatives as transformations of the norm system. Then a static modal logic for norm propositions is defined on that basis. In the course of this exposition we stress the performative nature of (i) free choice permission, (ii) the sealing legal principle and (iii) the social nature of permission. That is, (i) granting a disjunctive permission means granting permission for both disjuncts; (ii) non-prohibition does not entail permission, but the authority can declare that whatever he does not forbid is thereby permitted; and (iii) granting permission to one person means that all others are committed to not prevent the invocation of that permission. In Multi Agent Systems it is often the case that individual preferences are not compatible and coalitions compete to achieve a given result. The paper presents a language to talk about the conflict between coalitional choices and it expresses deontic notions to evaluate them. We will be specifically concerned with cases where the collective perspective is at odds with the individual perspective.

The aim of the work is to provide a language to reason about Closed Interactions, i.e. all those situations in which the outcomes of an interaction can be determined by the agents themselves and in which the environment cannot interfere with they are able to determine. We will see that two different interpretations can be given of this restriction, both stemming from Pauly Representation Theorem. We will identify such restrictions and axiomatize their logic. Article enumerates memoirs and diaries written between the late 16th and the middle of the 17th century in which Russian threads occur. As the review of source texts, it acts as an introduction to research on rich and detailed image of Russia and Russians, emerged from many relics of Old Polish memoirism. Paper debriefs also a current studies related to this issue.

A partir du XIXe siècle, les découvreurs des Slaves se sont déclarés pour l'autodétermination des sociétés appartenant à cette région de l'Europe qui était pratiquement condamnée à l'oubli, pour la stimulation de leurs contracts culturels et pour le soutien de leurs efforts de libération nationale. Les Polonais se sont trouvés ainsi en difficulté : ils devaient décider comment concilier la foi en bonté et fraternité slaves avec la haine pour les envahisseurs du même sang, étant donné que cette haine était (...) déjà reconnue comme la condition nécessaire de lutte pour la délivrance du pays. C'est pourqoui ils défendaient la thèse disant que la nation russe est devenue oppresive, parce qu'elle agissait elle-même sous la contrainte des forces ennemies, et qu’elle devrait être libérée a son tour afin de pouvoir faire partie de la communauté slave. Tout en ayant conscience que l'unité slave était menacé (il est à noter que les slavophiles russes formulaient la même crainte, bien qu'ils l'aient justifiée différemment), les Polonais développaient l'idee que la réconciliation historique des peuples polonais et russe était impossible et que c'est l'absolutisme tsariste qui a divisé ces peuples d'un gouffre béant. Et leur vision de la communauté slave devenait moins cohérente au fut et à mesure qu'ils confrontaient la forme d'administration communautaire avec l'autocrate du tsarisme. Dès lors, les slavophiles romantique se déclaraient plutôt pour l'idee de s'allier avec les Français (l'alliance franco-polonaise), telle qu'elle a été proclamée par Mickiewicz et ils prêtaient moins d'attention à des mots sporadiquement lancés par Staszic et Hoene-Wroński en faveur de l'alliance slavo-russe. Ces préférences se sont affermies surtout en présence d'une menace de "déluge panslaviste". Comme la chute de la Révolution de 1848 a rayé les espérances de ceux qui attendaient un soutien matériel de la part de l'Occident, on a reconsidéré une possibilité de concilier les Polonais avec le peuple russe, cette fois-ci par la voie de conquête spirituelle de ce dernier. Mais en définitive, on a reconnu l'irréel de cette solution, tout en ayant égard à un partage culturelle existant a l'intérieur de la communauté slave et à différence des traditions polotique et religieuse. Ce qui a résisté cependant aux oustrages du temps, c'est la volonté d'instraurer le peuple polonais en tant que "avant-poste européen de la communauté slave" au nom de la lutte contre la scission propre a l'idéologie de slavophiles. W 1768 roku Turcja zagrożona ekspansywną polityką Moskwy, w tym zwłaszcza rozwojem sytuacji w Rzeczypospolitej, wypowiedziała Rosji wojnę. Toczyła się ona do 1774 roku i zakończona została klęską Turcji i podpisaniem pokoju w Küczük Kajnardży, na mocy którego Rosja umocniła się kosztem Turcji w basenie Morza Czarnego, a caryca Katarzyna II zrealizowała dążenia podjęte już za Piotra I Wielkiego. Zmagania wojenne Rosji z Turcją obserwowane były w Rzymie z dużą uwagą, a nuncjusze papiescy starali się nadsyłać do Rzymu wszelkie (...) informacje, jakimi dysponowali na ten temat. Stolica Apostolska w swoich zabiegach dotyczących ratowania statusu Kościoła katolickiego w Rzeczypospolitej musiała też uwzględniać przebieg wojny rosyjsko-tureckiej. Ten istotny aspekt polityki Stolicy Apostolskiej nie był dotychczas poruszany w literaturze przedmiotu – zarówno polskiej, jak i obcej – stąd też niniejszy artykuł jest pierwszą próbą podjęcia tego tematu. Informacji na temat wojny papiescy dyplomaci przesyłali wiele. Pochodziły one nie tylko z dworów, przy których byli akredytowani, lecz także od ich informatorów. Często jednak wiele z tych wieści, co w tym czasie było normą, nie było zbyt dokładnych lub zawierało nieprawdziwe dane, lecz w Sekretariacie Stanu konfrontowano je z innymi źródłami, sprawdzając ich wiarygodność, tak że obraz wojny uzyskany tą drogą dawał dobrą orientację zarówno w przebiegu konfliktu, jak i staraniach dyplomatycznych mających na celu doprowadzenie do zawarcia pokoju. Szczególnie bałamutne były informacje napływające z pogranicza turecko-rosyjskiego i pogranicznych ziem Rzeczypospolitej, sugerujące rozszerzenie konfliktu rosyjsko-tureckiego na Rzeczypospolitą. Jednak konfrontacja informacji napływających z różnych źródeł pozwalała kierownikom dyplomacji papieskiej na odtworzenie w sumie poprawnego obrazu wojny. Nuncjusze papiescy trafnie interpretowali też intencje poszczególnych krajów czy to zaangażowanych w konflikt, czy działania dyplomatyczne mające na celu doprowadzenie do pokoju, jak również realizację interesów poszczególnych państw. Artykuł niniejszy stawia sobie za cel prezentację myśli Henryka Kamieńskiego, autora książki Rosja i Europa. Polska. Wstęp do badań nad Rosją i Moskalami. Polski filozof, socjolog i ekonomista starał się w latach 50-tych i 60-tych XIX wieku uświadomić swym współczesnym złożoność polsko-rosyjskich relacji, opisanych na szerokim, historycznym i geopolitycznym tle. Sprawy Rosji, którą określał mianem „barbarii”, uznawał za istotne nie tylko z polskiej perspektywy, ale wskazywał na cywilizacyjne zagrożenia, jakie mogą wyniknąć dla Europy z lekceważenia imperium carów. Równocześnie, na (...) co wskazuje Wojciech Karpiński, znawca dorobku Kamieńskiego, „nakreślone przez niego socjologiczne i politologiczne interpretacje fenomenu totalitarnego, nie mają sobie równych w europejskiej myśli XIX stulecia i zachowują swoje znaczenie w końcu XX wieku”. The article presents various methodological approaches to the Cossacks Studies with a special focus on the past and present academic discourses and practices in Ukraine, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Kazakhstan and Poland. Images of Cossack armies provide an interesting but hybrid research material, because these military groups represent both the identity of the border communities and the military democratic society. Hence the exceptionally varied ways of viewing their identity in which this group has been seen as a nation, (...) ethnic group, Asian Orda or Russian//Ukrainian military nobility. In contemporary Ukrainian science, the Cossacks have been perceived as a leading force behind the nation-building process, while for the Russian researchers, they have been depicted as local insurgents. In Polish science and discourse, the Cossacks are analyzed strictly from the Polish historical perspective. The article suggests that those diversified approaches to the Cossack identity and history may help formulating a comprehensive and universal discourse and methodology for the Cossacks Studies.
