Duhem's 1908 essay questions the relation between physical theory and metaphysics and, more specifically, between astronomy and physics–an issue still of importance today. He critiques the answers given by Greek thought, Arabic science, medieval Christian scholasticism, and, finally, the astronomers of the Renaissance.

Le terme de mécanique étant pris dans son extension la plus large, l'auteur y retrace, dans un langage limpide, les transformations qui ont affecté la physique dans son ensemble. A partir d'une analyse attentive de la crise que traversait alors la science, Duhem formule plusieurs thèses profondes et originales, qui amèneront la conception générale de son ¶uvre célèbre, (...)
