As a philosopher, Richard McKeon spent his career developing Pragmatism in a new key, specifically by tracing the ways in which philosophic problems arise in fields other than philosophy—across the natural and social sciences and aesthetics—and showed the ways in which any problem, pushed back to its beginning or taken to its end, is a philosophic problem. The history of freedom is the record of what men have said and done and the interpretation of the remains of what they have made. The history of freedom of thought and expression, the history of literature and of criticism, is constructed by interference from those records and remains. The documents and artifacts in which thoughts are embodied and expressed and in which historians detect ideas and uncover their consequences in thought and action are the primary matter of the history (...) of freedom of thought and expression. The production of books or other modes of expression, their preservation, dissemination, interpretation, and use are results at each stage of the interplay of freedom and restraint, spontaneity and judgment. The freedom of writers to write, the freedom of readers to read, and the freedom of critics or judges or censors to select criteria which establish communities united by common opinions, beliefs, or institutions supplement and delimit each other. Richard McKeon, editor of The Basic Works of Aristotle, delivered this paper at the International Conference on Freedom of Thought and Expression in the History of Ideas held by the International Society for the History of Ideas in Venice, September 28—October 2, 1975. Well before the current age of discourse, deconstruction, and multiculturalism, Richard McKeon propounded a philosophy of pluralism showing how "facts" and "values" are dependent on diverse ways of reading texts. This book is a transcription of an entire course, including both lectures and student discussions, taught by McKeon. As such, it provides an exciting introduction to McKeon's conception of pluralism, a central aspect of neo-Pragmatism, while demonstrating how pluralism works in a classroom setting. In his lectures, (...) McKeon outlines the entire history of Western thinking on the sciences. Treating the central concepts of motion, space, time, and cause, he traces modern intellectual debates back to the ancient Greeks, notably Plato, Aristotle, Democritus, and the Sophists. As he brings the story of Western science up to the twentieth century, he uses his fabled semantic schema (reproduced here for the first time) to uncover new ideas and observations about cosmology, mechanics, dynamics, and other aspects of physical science. Justification for reading Pride and Prejudice as a philosophical novel may be found in its much cited and variously interpreted opening sentence: "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." This universal law is the first principle of a philosophical novel, although I shall also interpret it as the statement of a scientific law of human nature, a characterization of the civility of English society, and (...) as a pronouncement on the manners of an economic class. Pride and Prejudice is a philosophical novel both in the sense of presenting a philosophy in exposition and of embodying a philosophy in action, and literary criticism exercises its proper function by expounding that philosophy and by explicating and clarifying the thought and action of the novel by means of it. The thought of Pride and Prejudice may be uncovered by interpreting it in accordance with any of a variety of philosophies, but it is peculiarly appropriate, and enlightening, to recognize its Platonizing echoes since the dialogues of Plato have gone through a history of interpretation that has evolved distinctions which are useful in interpreting Pride and Prejudice. Many interpreters of Plato's dialogues, in antiquity and later, argue that they are not statements of thoughts or opinions but are simply exhibitions of how philosophers talk; others, beginning with the Old Academy, interpret them as the expression of the truth not of the doctrines of one philosopher, but of all philosophers; some, beginning with the skepticism of the Middle or New Academy, hold that the method of Socrates was to demonstrate that all doctrines are false and therefore, by the same token, true; and some, following the Neoplatonists, sought in them the adumbration of a truth transcending human thought and expression. Neoplatonic truths are suited to tragedy and epic; skeptical Academic opinions provide a place and expectation proper to comedy. All Platonisms share hierarchical structures of being, thought, and aspiration. Plato himself describes three ladders of being, knowledge, and love in the Republic and the Symposium. The New Academic skepticism chooses a low place on those ladders, which is excellently named in the opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice: knowledge is based on self-evident truths, opinion can rise no higher than "a truth universally accepted," "possession of a good fortune" is a dubious degradation of vision of the ideal God to possession of material goods, and "want of a wife" is a transformation of charity or agape or love of the good in itself to concupiscence or eros or matrimony. We have met in this conference to discuss “critical pluralism.” It will be a conference or discussion if the participants present different conceptions of critical pluralism based on different conceptions of criticism. Pluralism will enter the discussion in two ways: in the plurality of statements, which will be easy to recognize, and in the plurality or identity of what the statements are about, which will be problematic. There are three possible conclusions to which the discussion may lead. Some of the (...) participants may argue that only one of the opposed statements is about criticism and that the others may be about the work, but do not treat it as a literary work; these participants may so deny the possibility of critical pluralism. Some may present different modes of critical interpretation of a literary work and argue that they are different interpretations of the same work; these participants may recognize no need to differentiate different aspects in the work to which they interpretations are relevant. Finally, some may argue that the different modes of criticism apply to different aspects of the work which should be named differently and be treated by different methods, and which should be considered distinct objects of interpretation.The variety of critical methods and the variety of objects to which those methods can be applied are apparent when the reflexive relations between the pluralism of the interpretation of books and the pluralism of the circumstances and the matters that condition and constitute books are examined in a paradigm of possible forms and matters related to each other paradoxically. Many of the recurrent pairs of terms joined and differentiated in the literature of criticism are related paradoxically. ZusammenfassungEs werden zwei Begriffe, «Prozess» und «Funktion», besprochen, welche in der heutigen Philosophie zu Grundbegriffen zweier, miteinander unvereinbarer philosophischer Systeme geworden sind, die sich beide auf die Wissenschaft stützen. In dieser hingegen werden die beiden genannten Begriffe nicht als einander ausschliessend angesehen, sondern funktionieren als Leitbegriffe zweier nebeneinder stehenden Hypothesen, welche zu verschiedenen Methoden der Forschung führen. Im ersten Teil des vorliegenden Aufsatzes wird der Begriff «Prozess» im Hinblick auf die gegenwärtige Physik untersucht und vier Grundstellungen unterschieden, die sich in (...) der Relativitätstheorie Whiteheads, in der Einsteinschen einheitlichen Feldtheorie, in der mit dieser unvereinbaren Auffassung der führenden Quantenphysiker und dem Bridgmanschen Operationismus ausprägen. Im zweiten Teil wird der Begriff «Funktion» im Hinblick auf die heutige Biologie erörtert. Die beiden oben erwähnten philosophischen Systeme zeigen aber, dass philosophisch Funktionen als Prozesse und umgekehrt Prozesse als Funktionen aufgefasst werden können. Andererseits beeinflusst jeder Begriff von «Prozess», der in der Physik entwickelt wird, die Biologie und jeder Begriff von «Funktion», der in der Biologie auftritt, hat Bedeutung für die Physik. Im Grunde genommen, sind die beiden genannten Begriffe die Grenzpunkte des Weges, den die Entwicklung der, aus der antiken Philosophie stammenden Begriffe «Sein» und «Substanz» genommen hat. Beide haben ihre berechtigte methodische Verwendung in der Wissenschaft. Vielleicht könnte die Philosophie, deren Grundfragen in den Wissenschaften eine fundamentale Rolle spielen, aus diesem Vorgehen der Wissenschaften lernen, ihre Begriffe genauer zu präzisieren, indem sie, statt ihre Thesen zu verabsolutieren, diese als Forschungshypothesen auffasst, deren Folgen zu untersuchen sind. Auch könnte man auf diese Weise dazu kommen, die philosophischen Thesen nicht als absolute, ausschliessende Gegensätze, sondern als «komplementär» aufzufassen und diese «komplementären» Gesichtspunkte für die wissenschaftliche Forschung auszuwerten.
