Discours Sur l'Origine Et les Fondements de l'Inégalité Parmi les Hommes.Jean-Jacques Rousseau & F. C. Green - 1941 - [Paris],: Cambridge University Press. Edited by Bertrand de Jouvenel.
Originally published in 1941, this book contains the French text of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's 1755 treatise Discours sur l'origine et les fondements de l'inégalité parmi les hommes, in which he examines the artificial origins of human social structures designed to keep one group elevated above another. The preface by F. C. Green provides the historical context for Rousseau's essay and explains its influence on the authors of the French Revolution. This book will be of value to anyone with an (...)

We report the identification of a recurrent, 520-kb 16p12.1 microdeletion associated with childhood developmental delay. The microdeletion was detected in 20 of 11,873 cases compared with 2 of 8,540 controls and replicated in a second series of 22 of 9,254 cases compared with 6 of 6,299 controls. Most deletions were inherited, with carrier parents likely to manifest neuropsychiatric phenotypes compared to non-carrier parents. Probands were more likely to carry an additional large copy-number variant when compared to matched controls. The clinical (...)

From natural disability to the moral man: Calvinism and the history of psychology.C. F. Goodey - 2001 - History of the Human Sciences 14 (3):1-29.
Some humanist theologians within the French Reformed Church in the 17th century developed the notion that a disability of the intellect could exist in nature independently of any moral defect, freeing its possessors from any obligations of natural law. Sharpened by disputes with the church leadership, this notion began to suggest a species-type classification that threatened to override the importance of the boundary between elect and reprobate in the doctrine of predestination. This classification seems to look forward to the (...)

Volney: 'The ruins' and 'Catechism of natural law'.Colin Kidd, Lucy Kidd & C. -F. Volney (eds.) - 2024 - New York, NY: Cambridge University Press.
A fresh modern translation of a major French Revolutionary text, whose arguments for popular sovereignty are couched in the form of an Oriental dream-tale. This is a forgotten bestseller in the history of political thought which was translated by Thomas Jefferson and hugely influenced radical poets from Shelley to Whitman.

Lost property? Legal compensation for destroyed sperm: a reflection and comparison drawing on UK and French perspectives.S. Cordell, F. Bellivier, H. Widdows & C. Noiville - 2011 - Journal of Medical Ethics 37 (12):747-751.
In a recent case in the UK, six men stored their sperm before undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer in case they proved to be infertile after the treatment. The sperm was not properly stored and as a result was inadvertently destroyed. The men sued the NHS Trust that stored the sperm and were in the end successful. This paper questions the basis on which the judgement was made and the rationale behind it, namely that the men ‘had ownership’ of the (...)
