According to Darwin, humans, just like other organisms, are not created by any special act. All organisms arise by natural processes from inanimate matter. Humans are no exception. But can it really be the case that even humans are ‘only’ animals – natural beings which (a) are completely made up of natural parts (in the end, of macro-molecules which themselves consist of atoms), and for which it is (b) true that all processes that occur within them are physico-chemical processes? In (...) recent years some German philosophers (e.g. Habermas and Wingert) have argued that man “is elevated above nature by his capacity for deliberation and his ability to judge and comprehend meanings” (Singer and Wingert 2003, 11). Does this mean that humans are ‘supernatural’ in some way or other? My aim is twofold. Firstly, I point out that even non-human animals to a certain extent have the capacity to deliberate and act for reasons. Secondly, I argue that one can also put forward theoretical considerations in favour of the thesis that entirely natural beings may have this capacity. Thus, my answer to the question of what parts of our accustomed views of humanity and the world must we abandon if even we humans are ‘only’ animals is: nothing or at any rate very little. At least, even if we humans are ‘only’ animals, we may have the capacity for deliberation and the ability to judge and comprehend meanings. (shrink)

Nicht nur Locke war der Auffassung, dass Willensfreiheit voraussetzt, dass ein Mensch bestimmte Fähigkeiten besitzt. Aber kann ein Mensch die für Freiheit entscheidenden Fähigkeiten auch dann besitzen, wenn der Weltverlauf vollständig determiniert ist? Unsere These ist, dass Akteure auch in einer deterministischen Welt über die freiheitsrelevanten Fähigkeiten verfügen können. Unser Argument hat vier Schritte. Im ersten Schritt argumentieren wir dafür, dass eine Fähigkeitstheorie bestimmte Anforderungen erfüllen muss, die sich im Zusammenhang mit freiheitsrelevanten Fähigkeiten als einschlägig erweisen werden, und stellen exemplarisch (...) eine Theorie vor, die diesen Anforderungen gerecht wird. Im zweiten Schritt unterscheiden wir sorgfältig zwischen unterschiedlichen Arten von Fähigkeiten. Im dritten Schritt zeigen wir, dass nur eine ganz bestimmte Sorte von Fähigkeiten mit dem Determinismus unvereinbar ist und diagnostizieren den entscheidenden Disput zwischen Kompatibilisten und Inkompatibilisten. Im vierten Schritt, schließlich, argumentieren wir dafür, dass wir gute Gründe für die Annahme haben, dass diese determinismusinkompatible Sorte von Fähigkeiten nicht diejenige ist, die für Willensfreiheit relevant ist. Ansgar Beckermann Once, a mind-body theory based upon the idea of supervenience seemed to be a promising alternative to the various kinds of reductionistic physicalism. In recent years, however, Jaegwon Kim has subjected his own brainchild to a very thorough criticism. With most of Kim’s arguments I agree wholeheartedly - not least because they converge with my own thoughts.² In order to explain the few points of divergence with Kim’s views, I shall have to prepare the ground a (...) little. In the course of this paper I will therefore do two things: At the start, I will try to sketch the logical topography of the „solution space“ of the problem Kim is concerned with. As a second step, I shall then comment on the concepts of identity, realization and reduction and attempt to show that Kim’s concept of realization is too narrow, because he is still very much in the grip of the traditional view with regard to what it means to show that a property _F _is identical with, or realized by, another property _G_. Wenn man in Lehrbüchern und einschlägigen Lexika nach einer Charakterisierung der Erkenntnistheorie sucht, findet man eine große Übereinstimmung im Hinblick auf die Grundfragen dieser Disziplin. Im ersten Band der von Jürgen Mittelstraß herausgegebenen Enzyklopädie Philosophie und Wissenschaftstheorie etwa findet sich folgender Eintrag: Erkenntnistheorie (!), philosophische Grunddisziplin, deren Gegenstand die Beantwortung der Frage nach den Bedingungen begründeten Wissens ist. Im klassischen Sinne schloß dies die Fragen nach der Entstehung, dem Wesen und den Grenzen der Erkenntnis ein ('die Wissenschaft vom Wesen und (...) den Prinzipien der Erkenntnis, vom [logischen] Ursprung, den Quellen, Bedingungen und Voraussetzungen, vom Umfang, von den Grenzen der Erkenntnis', R. Wissen kann sich nicht in wahrer Meinung erschöpfen. Das ist ein in der Diskussion um ei- nen adäquaten Wissensbegriff fast einhellig akzeptierter Gemeinplatz. Der Grund dafür ist ein- fach und auf den ersten Blick einleuchtend. Unserem normalen Gebrauch des Wortes „Wissen“ zufolge würden wir von jemandem, der aufgrund bloßen Ratens zu der Überzeugung kommt, daß beim nächsten Spiel die Roulettekugel auf der Zahl 34 liegen bleibt, auch dann nicht sagen, er habe gewußt, daß es so kommen werde, wenn das Ergebnis (...) tatsächlich eintritt. Wir unter- scheiden zufällig wahre Überzeugungen von solchen, die nicht zufällig, sondern z.B. aufgrund sorgfältigen Überlegens zustandegekommen sind. Nur im zweiten Fall sprechen wir von Wis- sen; bloß zufällig wahre Überzeugungen haben keinen Anspruch auf diesen Ehrentitel. „Bloß zufällig wahr“ nennen wir Überzeugungen, die auf eine Weise zustande gekommen sind, die mit ihrer Wahrheit nichts zu tun hat: durch Raten, Vorahnungen, Überredung usw. J. Habermas hat vor kurzem eine Konsenstheorie der Wahrheit in ihren Grundzügen skizziert, die er ausdrücklich als notwendige Alternative zu der s. E. unhaltbaren realistischen Korrespondenztheorie der Wahrheit versteht. In einer Kritik der Habermasschen Konsenstheorie wird jedoch zu zeigen versucht, daß die Plausibilität dieser Theorie gerade auf der Inanspruchnahme nicht explizit gemachter realistischer Voraussetzungen beruht. Es wird argumentiert, daß sich realistische Prämissen in den Habermasschen Überlegungen ebenso in der Explikation des Begriffs "Konsenstheorie" nachweisen lassen wie in der Annahme nicht-konventioneller Methoden (...) zur Überprüfung empirischer Aussagen und in der Verwendung des Begriffs Kompetenz ebenso wie in der Theorie der idealen Sprech-situation. The crucial point of the mind-body-problem appears to be that mental phenome- na (events, properties, states) seem to have features which at first sight make it impossible to integrate these phenomena into a naturalistic world view, i.e. to identify them with, or to reduce them to, physical phenomena.1 In the contemp- orary discussion, there are mainly two critical features which are important in this context. The first of these is the feature of intentional states, e.g. beliefs and desires, to have (...) a representational or semantic content. The problem of the naturalization of these states I will call the problem of intentionality. The second critical feature is the property of other mental states, e.g. perceptions and sensations, to have a qualitative aspect, i.e. that it is somehow, or feels in a characteristic way, to be in one of those states. Es gibt nicht das Problem des Naturalismus, sondern – wie die Beiträge in diesem Band zeigen – eine ganze Familie von mehr oder weniger stark miteinander verbundenen Teilproblemen. In diesem Aufsatz soll es nur um eines dieser Teilprobleme gehen – das Problem des ontologi- schen Naturalismus. Oder, um es genauer zu sagen, um eine spezifische Variante dieses Teil- problems – das Problem des ontologischen Physikalismus. Die Grundthese des ontologischen Physikalismus lautet einfach.

Two factions opposed each other: Biological mechanists claimed that the properties characteristic of living organisms could be ex- plained mechanistically, in the way the behavior of a clock can be explained by the properties and the arrangement of its cogs, springs, and weights. In this paper the author tries to disentangle some of the problems tied up in John Searle's famous Chinese-room-argument. In a first step to answer the question what it would be for a system to have not only syntax, but also semantics the author gives a brief account of the functioning of the language understanding systems (LUS) so far developed in the framework of AI research thereby making clear that systems like Winograd's SHRDLU are indeed doing little more than mere (...) number crunching. But things would be entirely different, the author argues, if the database of a LUS were built up by the system itself via some perceptual component-at least, if this perceptual component had the capacity to distinguish objects having a certain property F from objects which do not. For in this case the system could store an internal representation of the fact that the object has the property F in its database if and only if the object in fact has that property. And this would be a good basis for calling such a system a genuine LUS. But Searle has objected to a very similar account of J. Fodor that nothing could be further from true language understanding. The reason for this complaint seems to be that Searle holds the view that a true LUS must e.g., know that the word hamburgers refers to hamburgers and that he moreover claims that this knowledge must be explicit or that the system must be aware of the reference of hamburgers to hamburgers. The author argues that this is asking too much. For it seems plausible to say that a system is able to understand e.g., the word hamburger even if it has only implicit knowledge of the fact that hamburger refers to hamburgers in the sense that it has the capacity to tell hamburgers from non hamburgers and the capacity to bring the word hamburger together just with objects of the former kind. As far as an adequate understanding of phenomenal consciousness is concerned, representationalist theories of mind which are modelled on the information processing paradigm, are, as much as corresponding neurobiological or functionalist theories, confronted with a series of arguments based on inverted or absent qualia considerations. Leib-Seele-Problem – 1. Begriff und Problem. Die Frage nach der Beziehung zwischen Körper und Seele (S.) ist die zentrale Frage des Leib-S.- bzw. des Körper-Geist-Problems. Der Aus- druck ‹Körper-Geist-Problem› ist aus zwei Gründen vorzuziehen. Erstens ist der Ausdruck ‹Leib› (L.) sowohl in der Alltags- als auch in der philosophischen Fachsprache mit vielen Kon- notationen verbunden, die Anlaß zu Mißverständnissen sein könnten. Zweitens unterscheidet man im Dt. häufig zwischen Geist und Seele, indem man dem Geist den Bereich des rationalen Überlegens und (...) Handelns zuordnet, der S. dagegen den Bereich der Gefühle und der Intuition. Um das Problem, um das es geht, zu kennzeichnen, benötigt man jedoch ein Wort, das – wie das englische ‹mind› – beide Bereiche umfaßt. Aus diesem Grund scheint der Ausdruck ‹Geist› auf den ersten Blick ebenso unpassend wie der Ausdruck ‹S.›. In der philosophischen Fachsprache hat es sich jedoch eingebürgert, ‹mind› mit ‹Geist› zu übersetzen, und aus diesem Grund ist die- ses Wort in diesem Zusammenhang vorzuziehen. Hinter der Frage nach der Beziehung zwischen Geist und Körper steht die grundlegendere Frage nach der ontologischen Natur des Geistigen. Ist das Geistige etwas Eigenständiges, das vom Physischen grundsätzlich verschieden ist? Oder ist das Geistige selbst nur eine Spielart des Phy- sischen? Einen Geist zu haben heißt, daß man wahrnehmen, überlegen und sich erinnern kann, daß man Überzeugungen, Wünsche und Befürchtungen haben und daß man Schmerz und Freu- de empfinden kann. Einen Geist zu haben bedeutet also, daß man über bestimmte Fähigkeiten und Eigenschaften verfügt. Im Hinblick auf die Frage nach der ontologischen Natur des Geisti- gen muß man daher zwei Teilfragen unterscheiden: 1. Was ist die Natur der Träger mentaler Eigenschaften? 2. Was ist die Natur dieser Eigenschaften selbst? Die erste Frage verweist auf das Problem mentaler Substanzen, die zweite Frage auf das Prob- lem mentaler Eigenschaften. Im Hinblick auf beide Fragen kann man zwischen Dualisten und Monisten unterscheiden, wobei weiter drei Spielarten des Monismus unterschieden werden müssen: Der Materialismus oder Physikalismus mit seiner These, daß alles physischer Natur ist; der Idealismus mit der These, daß alles geistiger Natur ist; und schließlich der neutrale Monis- mus, der behauptet, daß alles von Natur aus gleich ist, daß diese Natur jedoch weder geistig noch physisch ist.. In seinem Beitrag Was bleibt von der Analytischen Philosophie? hat Peter Bieri all das aufgelistet, was ihm an der gegenwärtigen Analytischen Philosophie missfällt. In dieser Replik wird erstens die Geschichte der Analytischen Philosophie in Erinnerung gerufen. Zweitens wird in Auseinandersetzung mit Bieris Kritik folgendes Bild von Philosophie entworfen: Es gibt überdauernde philosophische Fragen, und Philosophie sollte nicht als ein essayistisches Unternehmen, sondern als der systematische Versuch verstanden werden, Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden. Allerdings lassen sich philosophische Fragen niemals definitiv (...) beantworten; deshalb kann das Ziel nur sein, einen möglichst vollständigen Überblick über die verschiedenen Antworten zu geben und dabei zugleich klar zu machen, was für und was gegen diese Antworten spricht. In his paper "Machines and the Mental" Fred Dretske claims that there is a difference on principle between men on the one and animals and machines on the other side which arises from the fact that men are able to respond to the meaning of symbols whereas animals and machines can only respond to the symbols that have the meaning. In this paper it is argued that this claim does not bear closer scrutiny. Mainly for two reasons: 1. The mere (...) having of a certain meaning does not rank among the possible causal properties of a symbol, not even in the case of men; for it is not the having of the meaning that may have certain effects on the behavior of a person, but the fact that the person associates this meaning with the symbol. 2. Even animals are capable to associate a meaning with a symbol, i. e. even animals can learn to come to believe that p if they become aware of a symbol which has the meaning that p. (shrink)
