Opinion surveys were taken in an effort to determine the philosophical beliefs of students beginning philosophy. Correlated sets were made of those who took the survey before and after a first course in philosophy; and opinion shifts noted. The acquired information may be of interest to people in various disciplines. The authors tested the semantic usage of certain epistemological terms, the change in religious beliefs, the degree of consistency between general skepticism and particular knowledge claims. Finally, the authors proposed a (...) consistency test for the measure of the extent to which a sample of students “clarified their beliefs,”; and attempted to measure their own pedagogical efficiency with reference to this test. Academic appointments: University of Dayton; Canisius College; Northwestern University; Duquesne University; Northern Illinois University. I first left the university to pursue a career in metallurgical research and nuclear technology. But I soon found myself drawn back to the uni versity to 'round out' an overly specialized education. It was along this path that I was 'waylaid' into philosophy by (...) teachers like H. L. Van Breda and Bernard Boelen. The philosophy department at Duquesne University was then (1958-1962) a veritable "little Louvain," and the Belgian-Dutch connection exposed me to (among other visiting scholars) Jean Ladriere and Joe Kockelmans, who planted the seeds which eventually led me to the hybrid discipline of a hermeneutics of natural science, and prompted me soon after graduation to make the first of numerous extended visits to Belgium and Germany. The endeavor to learn French and German led me to the task of translating the phenomenological literature bearing especially on natural science and on Heidegger. The talk in the sixties was of a "continental divide" in philosophy between Europe and the Anglo-American world. But in designing my courses in the philosophy of science, I naturally gravitated to the works of Hanson, Kuhn, Polanyi and Toulmin without at first fully realizing why I felt such a strong kinship with them, beyond their common anti positivism. The first thing to note about Peirce’s semiotic aesthetics is that Peirce himself had very little to say about it. Two articles published in the Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism are concerned with determining Pierce’s views on aesthetic theory. The first was by Max Oliver Hocutt, in 1962, called “The Logical Foundations of Peirce’s Aesthetics.” This article has something less than an auspicious start, however, since its first sentence reads, “There is a sense in which it might be said (...) that Charles Peirce had no aesthetics.” And since that sentence is followed in the next paragraph with one of the flattest—or, if you prefer, deadest of metaphors, to wit. The publication of this volume, which should presage the appearance of a second, given the subtitle, is mentioned to have grown out of a seminar, taught by the author at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris during the academic year, 1977-78. The content concerns the concept of the gift, whose aporia of reason constitutes the bulk of the four essays. For those interested in such matters the author includes a three-page foldout of Baudelaire's Counterfeit Money, on a facing page of (...) the original text in French. After that text has been deconstructed in the final two essays, one might, after all, be interested in Baudelaire's original thoughts on the nature of gifts and countergifts. (shrink)

Heidegger’s exegesis of Hegel’s concept of experience was not published under copyright until 1950, when, as part of Holzwege, it appeared under the Klostermann imprint. Previously, it had been aired in the 1942–43 academic year as a seminar topic, conceived as a comparison between the “Introduction” of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Mind and the fourth and tenth books of Aristotle’s Metaphysics; and, at the same time, as two lectures to a private group of interested scholars. This volume unites the Dove translation (...) of the Hegelian Introduction with the Harper and Row translation of the Heideggerian exegesis. (shrink)

This text is composed of a Preface and an Index sandwiching ten articles by the author, spanning more than twenty years of his scholarly career, which was spent mostly at Boston College and at l'Université de Louvain. The essays were composed either in the author's native French or in a very readable visitor's English. One of the principal benefits of having this text is its insights into the original German culture that has inspired the essays. When the author himself uses (...) the term "German classicism" he intends specifically the work of Goethe, Schiller, and Hölderlin. Otherwise, the term is used to enclose the philosophical period moving from Kant through Hegel. (shrink)
