Hume ist ein Vertreter der Moral-Sense-Schule der Ethik. Unter Tugend versteht er die Disposition zu tugendhaftem, d. h. selbstlosem Handeln. Der positive Wert tugendhaften Handelns besteht in seinem Nutzen, sei es für das Wohlergehen der betroffenen Individuen, sei es für die Gesellschaft als ganze durch die Stabilisierung ihrer institutionellen Ordnung. Dieser Doppelfunktion entsprechend, unterscheidet Hume zwischen den natürlichen Tugenden des Wohlwollens und den künstlichen Tugenden der Gerechtigkeit. Hume glaubte, den Hobbes zugeschriebenen Egoismus widerlegen zu müssen: Aus der überwältigenden empirischen Evidenz, (...) dass es tugendhafte Handlungen gibt, folgerte er, dass eine Art fundamentaler Sympathie für unsere Mitmenschen Teil der menschlichen Natur ist und dass der Egoismus daher falsch ist. Tatsächlich aber wird der von Hobbes vertretene Egoismus durch Humes Nützlichkeitserklärung der sozialen Tugenden nicht widerlegt, sondern bestätigt. (shrink)

Wie es scheint, hat Hume in Of personal identity die Identität der Person bestritten. Tatsächlich hat er lediglich eine falsche Auffassung von Person und Selbst kritisiert und daran anschließend zu erklären versucht, durch welche psychischen Mechanismen es zur Bildung dieser falschen „idea of self“ kommt. Diese Erklärung ist misslungen und von Hume im Appendix revoziert worden. Hume selbst hat dagegen einen vollkommen unspektakulären und alltäglichen Begriff der Person vertreten, wie in Of pride and humility so beiläufig wie überzeugend deutlich wird.

In this essay the author argues that an ontological problem of a work of art, one of the long-standing problems of the philosophy of art, is merely an apparent one. The author argues that it in fact comprises two particular, different problems. The first is the question of how the thing being described in aesthetic terms exists, whether the aesthetic and physical description of a thing are so different, indeed disparate, that they cannot – as some philosophers of art assume (...) – relate to the same thing. The second problem is the question of how a work of a multiple art can exist, whether we can identify it with the individual act of performing or using this work. The first problem, argues the author, stems from the erroneous assumption that the disparateness of the aesthetic and physical description of a thing leads to the conclusion that the object of aesthetic description must exist differently from the way a physical description exists. The second problem emerges from a lack of understanding of how we use the term “work of art,” when we use it for a work of multiple art. The author also criticizes simultaneous attempts by Arthur Danto and Joseph Margolis, two leading philosophers of art, to solve the ontological problem of the work of art. (shrink)

Es wird gezeigt, was Kant zu einer Geschmackskritik in transzendentaler Absicht motiviert und wie er in Form einer entdeckenden Analyse die Erklarung dafur zu finden sucht, warum reine asthetische Urteile mit einem Allgemeingultigkeitsanspruch auftreten konnen, auch wenn sie ihn nicht einlosen konnen. Kritische Betrachtungen der Einleitungen zur Kritik der Urteilskraft und Analysen von Kants Theorie der schonen Form und seiner Theorie der anhangenden Schonheit runden die Untersuchung (...) ab. Der zweiten Auflage der Abhandlung sind ein Register und ein langeres Nachwort beigegeben, das auf einige Titel der neueren Forschungsliteratur eingeht (Ginsborg, Fricke, Henrich, Otto). (shrink)

Aufgrund der vielen Spuren in Kants Reflexionen und in der Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten kann es als sicher gelten, daß Kant die Theory of Moral Sentiments von Adam Smith gut gekannt hat. Vor allem die Figur eines unparteiischen Zuschauers mußte ihn interessieren, da Smith, der zwar eine moral-sense- Theorie entwickelt hat, diesen Typus von Ethik in einem gewissen Sinne rationalisiert, dann nämlich, wenn er die unparteiischen Zuschauer durch die Applikation allgemeiner Moralregeln urteilen läßt. Die Abhandlung konzentriert sich auf das (...) moralische Selbstbewußtsein, also auf den Begriff des Gewissens, bei Smith und Kant. Sie zeichnet die Rolle des unparteiischen Zuschauers in Smith's Konzept des Gewissens nach, das dieser als einen inneren Gerichtshof versteht. Die Abhandlung wendet sich dann Kant zu und skizziert dessen Idee einer wirklich auf Vernunft gegründeten Moral, die zugleich die Idee einer wirklich autonomen Moral ist. Auf der Basis dieser Idee ist aber die Vorstellung vom Gewissen als innerem Gerichtshof unhaltbar. Es muß daher überraschen, daß Kant bedauerlicherweise an dieser herkömmlichen Vorstellung vom Gewissen festhält und daß er damit weit hinter das begriffliche Niveau seines Entwurfs einer autonomen Moral zurückfällt. Es ergibt sich daraus für jeden, der mit der Idee der Kantschen Ethik sympathisiert, die Aufgabe, ein richtiges Verständnis des Gewissens zu formulieren. Because of the many traces in the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals and in the notices which Kant left behind, we know for sure that Kant was well acquainted with Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments . Especially the concept of an impartial spectator must have interested Kant since Adam Smith, though developing a moral-sense-theory of morals, in a way rationalises this type of ethics when he comes to understand the impartial spectator as judging not by his moral sense, but by the application of general moral rules. The paper concentrates on moral self-consciousness, i.e. on the concept of conscience in Smith and in Kant. It outlines the role of the impartial spectator Smith's theory of conscience which he understands as an intrapersonal court of justice. Turning to Kant, a sketch is drawn of his idea how really to base morals on reason, thereby formulating the concept of morals that really deserves to be called autonomous. On the basis of the Kantian idea of morals, however, the conception of conscience as an intrapersonal court of justice is untenable. To every reader it must therefore be a surprise, and indeed a real pity, that Kant nevertheless sticks to this traditional idea of conscience, thus falling far back behind the conceptual level of his own theory of morals. So, it is up to every one who sympathizes with a Kantian style of moral theory, to spell out the right way of understanding conscience. (shrink)

While Kant in his pre-critical work expressed appreciative, albeit reserved, sympathy toward the British moral sense school, in his main works on moral philosophy he harshly rejects the idea that we have a specific moral sense. This change in attitude is, of course, connected to Kant's discovery and formulation of a purely rational moral principle. Still one might ask whether Kant's critique of moral sense theory was really justified. To answer this question, I shall first examine what Kant understands the, (...) or a, moral sense to be. Second, I shall consider which arguments Kant employs to reject any moral sense. Third, I shall explain what Shaftesbury, Hutcheson, and Hume meant when discussing moral sense. Finally, I shall show that Kant's moral legalism cannot come to grips with the aspect of moral consciousness, for which the British moral philosophers coined the concept of moral sense, and that therefore Kant's criticism of moral sense theory is unjustified. Während der Kant der vorkritischen Schriften der moral-sense- Schule der Briten zwar nicht ohne Vorbehalte, aber doch mit anerkennender Sympathie gegenübergestanden hat, verwirft er in seinen moralphilosophischen Hauptschriften die Annahme eines spezifischen moralischen Sinnes mit äußerst harschen Worten. Dieser Wandel der Einstellung hängt natürlich mit Kants Entdeckung und Formulierung eines rein rationalen Moralprinzips zusammen. Dennoch stellt sich die Frage, ob Kants Kritik der moral-sense- Theorie wirklich berechtigt ist. Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage wird erstens untersucht, was Kant unter dem oder einem moralischen Gefühl versteht, zweitens wird geprüft, mit welchen Argumenten Kant die Annahme eines moral sense verwirft, und drittens wird mit Bezug auf Shaftesbury, Hutcheson und Hume dargelegt, was diese Theoretiker eigentlich unter einem moral sense verstanden haben. Abschließend wird dargetan, daß Kant mit seinem moralischen Legalismus eben den Aspekt des moralischen Bewußtseins nicht erfassen kann, für den die Briten den Begriff des moral sense geprägt haben, und daß seine Kritik der moral-sense- Theorie insofern unberechtigt ist. Spinozas und Humes Staatstheorien werden zuerst unter dem Aspekt der Staatsvertragstheorie verglichen, die von Hume kritisiert worden ist, während Spinoza sie zunächst vertreten hat. Es wird gezeigt, daß Spinoza, indem er diese Theorie später fallen ließ, ein Selbstkorrektur vorgenommen hat, weil die Staatsvertragstheorie unter Spinozas metaphysischen Prämissen haltlos ist. Spinoza und Hume werden dann unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Legitimität staatlicher Machtausübung verglichen. Hier liegen beide insofern nahe beieinander, als sie die Legitimität von Herrschaft auf die Erfüllung gewisser allgemeiner Staatszwecke gründen; (...) andererseits besteht die Differenz, daß Spinoza den bürgerlichen Gehorsam allein durch die überlegene Macht des Staates gewährleistet sieht, während Hume die These vertreten hat, daß die Autorität der Regierung niemals allein auf Macht, sondern vor allem auf der Überzeugung der Bürger von ihrem generellen Nutzen beruht. Aus der Beobachtung, dass es für jedes organisierte Wesen einen Bestzustand gibt, den zu erreichen bzw. zu erhalten sein oberstes Interesse ist, und aus der durchgängigen teleologischen Ordnung der Welt gewinnt Shaftesbury, der Vater der Moral-Sense-Schule der Ethik, sowohl den Unterschied von Nutzen und Schaden als auch den Begriff einer natürlichen Güte, die darin besteht, dass sich ein jedes Wesen, gemäß der Ordnung der Natur, für das Wohlergehen anderer Wesen als nützlich erweist. Der Begriff eigentlicher, allein dem Menschen eigener Tugend (...) ergibt sich dann aus den spezifischen Bedingungen menschlichen Handelns. Tugend besteht danach in der Disposition zu selbstlosem Handeln, das auf das Wohlergehen anderer gerichtet ist. Was uns leitet, wenn wir tugendhaft handeln, nennt Shaftesbury unseren Sinn für das Richtige und das Verkehrte und gelegentlich auch unseren natürlichen Moralsinn. – Bei Hutcheson rückt der Begriff des Moralsinns dann ins Zentrum der Theorie. Den Moralsinn versteht Hutcheson ausdrücklich als einen spezifischen Sinn, d. h. als die Disposition, auf bestimmte Gegebenheiten in spezifischer Weise zu reagieren. Tugendhaftes Handeln wird als selbstloses Handeln verstanden, das durch den Moralsinn auf das Wohlergehen anderer gerichtet ist. Gestützt auf das Konzept des Moralsinns, glaubte Hutcheson, einerseits den Rationalismus in der Ethik und andererseits den Hobbes zugeschriebenen Egoismus widerlegen zu können. – Nach Butler besteht Tugend darin, in Übereinstimmung mit der menschlichen Natur zu handeln. Diese These gewinnt Profil durch Butlers Konzeption der menschlichen Natur als eines Systems verschiedener Strebungen, Neigungen und Fähigkeiten, das durch das unser Handeln ständig begleitende Gewissen kohärent gehalten wird. Tugendhaftes Handeln besteht dann generell darin, zu tun, was das Gewissen fordert, verbietet oder erlaubt, und in einem spezielleren Sinn in selbstlosen Handlungen zum Wohle anderer. Alle drei Philosophen waren davon überzeugt, dass eine Disposition zur Moral Teil der menschlichen Natur ist. Sie sahen darin den Beleg für die Existenz einer ursprünglichen liebevollen Zuneigung zu unseren Mitmenschen und hielten deshalb den Hobbes zugeschriebenen Egoismus für falsch. (shrink)

In the first part of this paper, it is shown in what a conspicuous way the story of Oedipus illustrates a central feature of human agency, namely, that any action may turn out to be of quite another nature than it was thought, or intended, to be. The story of Oedipus provides further insight on comparing ancient and modern man's outlook on agents, their actions, and the world. It emerges that we moderns are lacking an adequate conceptual scheme for an (...) understanding of human agency that lives up to the demands of an enlightened picture of the world. This problem should be one of the central topics of a philosophical theory of action, rather than the misguided questions, e.g. about the causal nature of reasons for action that are usually treated there. Accordingly the sketch of a critique of action theory is being offered. (shrink)

What is the relationship between the world and logic, between intuition and language, between objects and their quantitative determinations? Rationalists, on the one hand, hold that the world is structured in a rational way. Representationalists, on the other hand, assume that language, logic, and mathematics are only the means to order and describe the intuitively given world. In World and Logic, Jens Lemanski takes up three surprising arguments from Arthur Schopenhauer’s hitherto undiscovered Berlin Lectures, which concern the philosophy of (...) language, logic, and mathematics. Based on these arguments, Lemanski develops a new position entitled ‘rational representationalism’: the world is always structured by human beings according to linguistic, logical, and mathematical principles, but the basic vocabulary of these structural descriptions already contains metaphors taken from the world around us. The purpose of this paper is the clarification of some methodological problems concerning Rawls’ theory of justice. The first part seeks to make more precise Tugendhat’s distinction between 1st-person-theory and 3rd-person-theory. Rawls’ theory fulfills all criteria for 1st-person-theories. In the second part Rawl’s coherence model for the justification of norms („reflective equilibrium“) is critically analyzed and opposed to the hypothetical decision which individuals are to make in the original position (contract model). It is shown that the conception of reflective equilibrium (...) is in various aspects mistaken. In conclusion a problem is indicated which Rawls has not satisfactorily resolved: The veil of ignorance is supposed to guarantee that the decision for the basic principles of social justice is unanimous. Nevertheless it would appear that the individuals in the original position either have too little empirical knowledge in order to make a rational decision, or they have too much knowledge in order to come to an unanimous decision. The veil of ignorance is either too fine or not fine enough. (shrink)

This paper analyses a hitherto unknown technique of using logic diagrams to create argument maps in eristic dialectics. The method was invented in the 1810s and -20s by Arthur Schopenhauer, who is considered the originator of modern eristic. This technique of Schopenhauer could be interesting for several branches of research in the field of argumentation: Firstly, for the field of argument mapping, since here a hitherto unknown diagrammatic technique is shown in order to visualise possible situations of arguments in a (...) dialogical controversy. Secondly, the art of controversy or eristic, since the diagrams do not analyse the truth of judgements and the validity of inferences, but the persuasiveness of arguments in a dialogue. (shrink)

Eristic has been studied more and more intensively in recent years in philosophy, law, communication theory, logic, proof theory, and A.I. Nevertheless, the modern origins of eristic, which almost all current researchers see in the philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, are considered to be a theory of the illegitimate use of logical and rhetorical devices. Thus, eristic seems to violate the norms of discourse ethics. In this paper, I argue that this interpretation of eristic is based on prejudices that contradict the original (...) intention of modern eristic. Eristic is not an art of being right or winning an argument, but an art of protecting oneself from the one who deliberately violates norms of discourse ethics to gain argumentative acceptance. For this reason, eristic must be seen as a discipline of Enlightenment philosophy and a correlate of discourse ethics. Especially in the age of alternative facts and post-factual politics, this makes eristic a valuable discipline. (shrink)

This paper presents an analysis of Seneca's 58th letter to Lucilius and Porphyry's Isagoge, which were the origin of the tree diagrams that became popular in philosophy and logic from the early Middle Ages onwards. These diagrams visualise the extent to which a concept can be understood as a category, genus, species or individual and what the method of dihairesis (division) means. The paper explores the dissimilarities between Seneca's and Porphyry's tree structures, scrutinising them through the perspective of modern graph (...) theory. Although traditional trees can be interpreted in a modern way, their terms and definitions defy modern standardisation. These distinctions are not only useful for differentiating between Seneca's and Porphyry's trees, but also for comprehending the evolution of this philosophical tradition. Thus the paper highlights the continued significance of these tree diagrams in analysing concepts and categories in philosophy and structuring objects and information in modern fields such as artificial intelligence, computer science, bioinformatics, graph theory, and many more. Reism or concretism are the labels for a position in ontology and semantics that is represented by various philosophers. As Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz and Jan Woleński have shown, there are two dimensions with which the abstract expression of reism can be made concrete: The ontological dimension of reism says that only things exist; the semantic dimension of reism says that all concepts must be reduced to concrete terms in order to be meaningful. In this paper we argue for the following two (...) theses: (1) Arthur Schopenhauer has advocated a reistic philosophy of language which says that all concepts must ultimately be based on concrete intuition in order to be meaningful. (2) In his semantics, Schopenhauer developed a theory of logic diagrams that can be interpreted by modern means in order to concretize the abstract position of reism. Thus we are not only enhancing Jan Woleński’s list of well-known reists, but we are also adding a diagrammatic dimension to concretism, represented by Schopenhauer. (shrink)

In this paper, I investigate whether we can use a world-involving framework to model the epistemic states of non-ideal agents. The standard possible-world framework falters in this respect because of a commitment to logical omniscience. A familiar attempt to overcome this problem centers around the use of impossible worlds where the truths of logic can be false. As we shall see, if we admit impossible worlds where “anything goes” in modal space, it is easy to model extremely non-ideal agents that (...) are incapable of performing even the most elementary logical deductions. A much harder, and considerably less investigated challenge is to ensure that the resulting modal space can also be used to model moderately ideal agents that are not logically omniscient but nevertheless logically competent. Intuitively, while such agents may fail to rule out subtly impossible worlds that verify complex logical falsehoods, they are nevertheless able to rule out blatantly impossible worlds that verify obvious logical falsehoods. To model moderately ideal agents, I argue, the job is to construct a modal space that contains only possible and non-trivially impossible worlds where it is not the case that “anything goes”. But I prove that it is impossible to develop an impossible-world framework that can do this job and that satisfies certain standard conditions. Effectively, I show that attempts to model moderately ideal agents in a world-involving framework collapse to modeling either logical omniscient agents, or extremely non-ideal agents. (shrink)

The counterfactual comparative account of harm has counterintuitive implications in cases involving overdetermination and preemption. A popular strategy for dealing with these problems appeals to plural harm—several events being jointly harmful. Björn Petersson criticizes this strategy on the grounds that it conflicts with a strong intuition that helps to motivate the counterfactual comparative account, namely, that harming someone essentially involves making a difference for the worse for her. In this paper, I argue that Petersson’s argument is unconvincing.

Logic diagrams have been increasingly studied and applied for a few decades, not only in logic, but also in many other fields of science. The history of logic diagrams is an important subject, as many current systems and applications of logic diagrams are based on historical predecessors. While traditional histories of logic diagrams cite pioneers such as Leibniz, Euler, Venn, and Peirce, it is not widely known that Kant and the early Kantians in Germany and England played a crucial role (...) in popularising Euler(-type) diagrams. In this paper, the role of the Kantians in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries will be analysed in more detail. It shows that diagrams (or intuition in general) were a highly contentious topic that depend on the philosophical attitude and went beyond logic to touch on issues of physics, metaphysics, linguistics and, above all, mathematics. Plotinus (204-70) is the founder of Neoplatonism and its most significant thinker. He shaped late antique philosophy and significantly influenced the entire metaphysical tradition of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and German Idealism. In this volume, Jens Halfwassen presents Plotinus' life and work, as well as the most important aspects of his historical influence. Issues of key importance for the Neoplatonists-such as the interaction between Being and Thought, the ascent of the soul, and the interpretation of Plato's theory of principles-are (...) explained in detail in the course of outlining the Neoplatonic metaphysical system. The introduction outlines Halfwassen's significant contribution to the study of Plotinus, paying particular attention to the differences between the current German and Anglophone approaches to the Platonic tradition.
