Balancing autonomy and responsibility: the ethics of generating and disclosing genetic information.Nina Hallowell, Claire Foster, Ros Eeles, A. Ardern-Jones, Veronica Murday & Maggie Watson - 2003 - Journal of Medical Ethics 29 (2):74-79.
Using data obtained during a retrospective interview study of 30 women who had undergone genetic testing—BRCA1/2 mutation searching—this paper describes how women, previously diagnosed with breast/ovarian cancer, perceive their role in generating genetic information about themselves and their families. It observes that when describing their motivations for undergoing DNA testing and their experiences of disclosing genetic information within the family these women provide care based ethical justifications for their actions. Finally, it argues that generating genetic information and disclosing this information (...)

    `Transgressing Venues': `Health' Studies, Cultural Studies and the Media.Martin King & Katherine Watson - 2001 - Health Care Analysis 9 (4):401-416.
This paper looks at how the strategies of mediaand cultural studies can be applied to thehealth studies field. This relationship, however, has been met with resistance due to anumber of status debates. We argue theimportance of fostering links between these`disciplines' namely because the definition ofwhat constitutes `health' has been broadenedand is inscribed in most forms of popularmedia. Using the example of the `health andlifestyle' debate, we argue that the mediainforms cultural understandings aboutrequirements for living and is therefore acrucial area of analysis (...)

How Generative Mindfulness Can Contribute to Inclusive Workplaces.Kathryn Goldman Schuyler, Lemuel Warren Watson & Elizabeth King - 2021 - Humanistic Management Journal 6 (3):451-478.
Humanistic management and mindfulness practices can potentiate one another to foster an inclusive society. By moving beyond a limited instrumental understanding of mindfulness practice to a generative mindfulness that incorporates a recognition of the rich nature of the human mind, awareness of cultural practices, and deeply rooted ethical foundations, managers can create organizational cultures that honor the sacred in every human being. A set of interviews with noted consultants and researchers on mindfulness and leadership suggests convergence on this perspective, (...)

Business ethics: Defining the twilight zone. [REVIEW]Deon Nel, Leyland Pitt & Richard Watson - 1989 - Journal of Business Ethics 8 (10):781 - 791.
This paper examines the issue of ethics policy in organizations. While the actions of top management may be the single most important factor in fostering corporate behaviour of a high ethical standard, there should be policy where policy is needed. The perceptions of three managerial groups — top- marketing- and purchasing managers — are compared regarding firstly, whether they see a need for policy on a range of ethically contentious issues, and secondly whether they believe there is policy covering these (...)

Using Slow-Paced Breathing to Foster Endurance, Well-Being, and Sleep Quality in Athletes During the COVID-19 Pandemic.Uirassu Borges, Babett Lobinger, Florian Javelle, Matthew Watson, Emma Mosley & Sylvain Laborde - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The coronavirus disease 2019 has been causing major disruptions in the sporting world. Negative physiological and psychological effects on athletes have been reported, such as respiratory issues and increased stress. Therefore, it is timely to support this population by presenting cost-effective and accessible intervention techniques to reduce this impact. Slow-paced breathing has the potential to counteract many of the detrimental effects of COVID-19 that can directly affect sports performance. In this article, we present and justify the use of SPB in (...)

Watson, Caterina Pesce, Chris Button, David Revalds Lubans, Tim Buszard, Barbara Walsh & Lawrence Foweather - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
BACKGROUND: There is a need for interdisciplinary research to better understand how pedagogical approaches in primary physical education (PE) can support the linked development of physical, cognitive and affective aspects of physical literacy and physical activity behaviours in young children. The Skill Acquisition Methods fostering Physical Literacy in Early-Physical Education (SAMPLE-PE) study aims to examine the efficacy of two different pedagogies for PE, underpinned by theories of motor learning, to foster physical literacy, especially for children living in disadvantaged areas. Does this apply here?: Ethical considerations in transnational supervision settings.Tammy Schultz, Hana Yoo, Mandy Kellums Baraka & Terri Watson - 2021 - Ethics and Behavior 31 (4):270-283.
ABSTRACT Most of the ethical decision making literature that guides mental health practice comes from the Western hemisphere. The well-meaning application of Western values in supervision can result in the intrusion of ethical standards that may not match the context and lacks sensitivity. In this qualitative study, researchers explored the supervisory experiences of 25 mental health professionals of 14 different nationalities, navigating complex ethical challenges in supervision practice in 17 countries. Using thematic analysis, several well-supported themes emerged. Recommendations for practice (...)

Addressing why ever larger segments of society are skeptical of what experts say, Expertise: A Philosophical Introduction reviews contemporary philosophical debates and introduces what an account of expertise needs to accomplish in order to be believed. E. L. Grant Watson, an English field naturalist, zoologist, and one of England's best-loved nature writers, spent a lifetime trying to bring nature and consciousness into a unified, holistic vision that would establish meaning in the world without losing wonder. The questions raised by facts of nature inexplicable in terms of conventional theories, together with insights gained from a reading of Jung--as well as by a study of early Christian gnostic literature and the anthroposophy of Rudolf Steiner--brought him to (...)
