F.W.J. Schellings, Jacques Derridas und Judith Butlers Auseinandersetzung mit Kants Werk zeigen jedoch auch, dass dabei auch die Regeln des Streites strittig werden müssen: Wer legt (...) die Regeln fest? So wird die Kritik an Religion selbst zwangsläufig mit Kritik konfrontiert: Wer hat die Macht über den vernünftigen Diskurs? Eine antagonismustheoretische Perspektive auf dieses Problem zeigt: Aus Feinden können Gegner werden und aus Krieg Streit. Doch ob sich Fortschritt und Freiheit aus braven Debatten und Reformen oder als harter Kampf einstellt - oder eben überhaupt nicht - ist eine offene Frage. (shrink)

Our research on the texts of the Byzantine historians and chroniclers revealed an apparently curious phenomenon, namely, the abandonment of terminally ill emperors by their physicians when the latter realised that they could not offer any further treatment. This attitude tallies with the mentality of the ancient Greek physicians, who even in Hippocratic times thought the treatment and care of the terminally ill to be a challenge to nature and hubris to the gods. Nevertheless, it is a very curious attitude (...) in the light of the concepts of the Christian Byzantine physicians who, according to the doctrines of the Christian religion, should have been imbued with the spirit of philanthropy and love for their fellowmen. The meticulous analysis of three examples of abandonment of Byzantine emperors, and especially that of Alexius I Comnenus, by their physicians reveals that this custom, following ancient pagan ethics, in those times took on a ritualised form without any significant or real content. A fundamental assumption of Alexius Meinong's 1904 Theory of Objects is the act-content-object analysis of psychological experiences. I suggest that Meinong's theory need not be based on this analysis, but that an adverbial theory might suffice. I then defend the adverbial alternative against an objection raised by Roderick Chisholm, and conclude by presenting an apparently more serious objection based on a paradox discovered by Romane Clark.

The notion is of historical interest, since it presages recent work on the logical paradoxes by Herzberger and Kripke. But it fails to do the job it was designed for. However, a technique implicit in Meinong's investigation is more successful and can be adapted to resolve a similar paradox discovered by Romane Clark in a revised version of Meinong's Theory of Objects (...) due to Rapaport. Bucher reads Heidegger’s thought as a contribution to the "problem of the concept". Heidegger says in Being and Time that the meaning of Being must be "conceived in a way of its own, essentially contrasting with the concepts in which entities acquire their determinate signification." Heidegger’s thought is construed, therefore, not as an attack upon all conceptualization but as an attempt to renew the conceptual terms in which we think upon Being. The focus of Bucher’s analysis is Heidegger’s (...) critique of Western metaphysics which he interprets as Heidegger’s critique of the traditional mode of conceptualization. Since it is clear that Heidegger himself does not consciously formulate his problem in this way, Bucher claims that he is dealing with the unthought implications of Heidegger’s work, rather than with his explicit expressions. This accords with Heidegger’s own counsel that we look for what is still unthought in a philosopher’s thought. The heart of the book is the last three chapters in which a "search for a new understanding of the concept" is undertaken, and in which Bucher argues that Heidegger’s repudiation of metaphysics constitutes an implicit, formally negative mode of conceptualizing a post-metaphysical understanding of Being. This contradicts the letter of Heidegger’s thought, Bucher concedes, but is in keeping with Heidegger’s own approach towards the great thinkers. Bucher’s proposal is quite interesting and is perhaps a sign of a new movement among philosophers to appropriate for philosophy Heidegger’s own critique of philosophy.—J. D. C. (shrink)

Review of Karel Lambert, Meinong and the Principle of Independence: Its Place in Meinong's Theory of Objects and Its Significance in Contemporary Philosophical Logic.

The rapidly growing research on hybrid organizations in recent years suggests that these organizations may have particular abilities to facilitate institutional change. This article contributes to our understanding of change and, in particular, sustainable transformation in society by highlighting the importance of organizational forms. Looking more closely at the role of hybrid organizations in processes of path generation, we analyze the conditions under which hybrid organizations may enable path generation. A retrospective exploratory case study of the Swedish hybrid organization The (...) Natural Step confirms how hybrids can take part in- and may facilitate the early phases of path generation: assimilation and coalescence. The conclusion drawn is that hybrids have multivocal abilities that enable them to earn trust and authority to open up “neutral” spaces for orientation and connection between actors in separated sub-paths, and that this in turn may ease tensions and trigger dialogue and exchange, also between former opponents. Yet, as also seen in the case, this enabling position of the hybrid may be both fragile and temporary. (shrink)
