Five faculty members in the College of Business at Northern Illinois University received a grant from the James S. Kemper Foundation to integrate ethics into the graduate business curriculum. This was the second phase of a comprehensive program to integrate ethics into the business curriculum. Each faculty member taught a required course in the MBA program. The faculty members represented each of the five functional departments in the College of Business.This paper describes the ethics content, materials, and approaches that were (...) used to cover ethics by each of the five faculty members. Hopefully, this description will help other faculty and universities integrate ethics more effectively into the business curriculum. (shrink)

This paper seeks to draw policy makers into a discussion of the need to guide technological change and of the steps required to accomplish this.

Science and technology influence international affairs by many different mechanisms. Both create new issues, risks and uncertainties. Advances in science alert the international community to new issues and risks. New technological capabilities transform war, diplomacy, commerce, intelligence, and investment. This paper identifies six basic patterns by which advances in science and technology influence international relations: as a juggernaut or escaped genie with rapid and wide-ranging ramifications for the international system; as a game-changer and a conveyer of advantage and disadvantage to (...) different actors in the international system; as a source of risks, issues and problems that must be addressed and managed by the international community; as key dimensions or enablers of international macro phenomena; as instruments of foreign policy or sources of technical information for the management of an ongoing international regime; as the subject of projects and institutions whose planning, design, implementation and management provide grist for the mill of international relations and diplomacy. Despite the ubiquity and critical importance of science and technology in international affairs, their role receives insufficient attention in traditional international relations curricula. There is little literature on how the relations between science, technology, economics, politics, law and culture should be taught in an international context. Since it is impossible even for scientists to master all the branches of natural science and engineering that affect public policy, the learning goals of students whose primary training is in the social sciences should (...) be to get some grounding in the natural sciences or engineering, to master basic policy skills, to understand the basic concepts that link science and technology to their broader context, and to gain a respect for the scientific and technological dimensions of the broader issues they are addressing. They also need to cultivate a fearless determination to master what they need to know in order to address policy issues, an open-minded but skeptical attitude towards the views of dueling experts, regardless of whether they agree with their politics, and (for American students) a world-view that goes beyond a strictly U.S. perspective on international events. The Georgetown University program in Science, Technology and International Affairs (STIA) is a unique, multi-disciplinary undergraduate liberal arts program that embodies this approach and could be an example that other institutions of higher learning might adapt to their own requirements. The technology in use in a country is determined less by the "supply push" of technologically oriented programs than by the "demand pull" from users. In a market economy, the latter is strong ly influenced by the level and structure of prices, wages, and exchange rates, by the price and avail abitity of credit, raw materials, and energy, by patterns of income distribution, and by the degree of competition among different producers. All of these are strongly influenced by government policies. (...) In a centrally planned economy, the demand for improved technology depends on the incentives facing decision-makers in factories and ministries. In both kinds of economies, the orientation and content of engineering education and general education, influence the values that engineers, entrepreneurs, and other decision-makers bring to the technological aspects of their development. What Weiss attempts to do in The God We Seek is to give a sort of phenomenology, to use his own word, of man's religious life. It is a philosophical anthropology more than a philosophical theology. I suppose I have, here and there, offered fragments of such a study, but in this book the focus is throughout on man's search for God as this search is found in the various religions. The primary emphasis is on the rivalry of religions, (...) or of religion with philosophy, rather than the rivalry of philosophies. Comparative religion, not comparative philosophy, is the main approach. Still, Weiss is very much the philosopher in this book. He is philosophical in an existential way, with emphasis upon relevant experiences of a profound sort. His own systematic metaphysics is kept in the background. True, he speaks rather constantly of "substances" or "beings"; but then every philosophy must have a translation for this term. Even the Buddhists have it, and certainly Whiteheadians or Peirceans do. But on the whole the language is philosophically nontechnical or neutral, and this has its advantages. Incidentally, the discussion of religious language is penetrating and judicious. (shrink)

One learns a great deal about a major philosopher by coming to appreciate his perspective on the history of philosophy. Here Charles Hartshorne gives us just such a perspective on the history of philosophy and thereby on himself. This is a reexamination of the history of philosophy, looking at neglected aspects of the philosophers’ thought, interpreting their views in a sharply focused, controversial manner in order to show the origins and development within the Western tradition of the metaphysical and (...) moral views represented by process philosophy. The result is a fresh look at the tradition. This is a clearly written, readable, original, and constructive interpretation of the history of philosophy in hte West from the sixth century before Christ to the present. As the best-known living representative of process philosophy, Hartshorne shows that it has anticipations in Plato, Aristotle, Leibniz, Hegel, Schelling, and many others, even including the materialist Epicurus and the atheist Nietzsche. Process philosophy and theology have significant overlap with the views of most of the creative, constructive philosophers and theologians of recent times, including Peirce, William James, Bergson, Heidegger, Paul Weiss, Berdyaev, John Findlay, Paul Tillich, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and others. This philosophy takes creative freedom, transcending causal determinism, and a generalized idea of sympathy—“feeling of feeling,” love—as universal principles of life and nature. (shrink)

For over sixty years, Charles Hartshorne has persistently and vigorously presented his distinctive philosophic position in a great number of places and on a great number of occasions. He has also been mainly responsible for the growing interest that thinkers in multiple fields have taken in Whitehead’s writings; has sparked a reexamination of the ontological argument; and has prompted a number of theologians to consider alternatives to traditional positions. Due to him “process philosophy” is a familiar term and an (...) option to consider seriously. Boldly challenging philosophers of every persuasion, unflinchingly objecting to basic assumptions of a number of well-entrenched schools, he has argued that his theistic antitrinitarian psychalism is not only a possible or even a plausible view, but the only view that is both properly defended and sound. Although he has not written a systematic treatise, and thus has not faced himself with the problem of seeing what his doctrines entail and where they face serious difficulties, he has dealt with almost every philosophic issue on some occasion, in relation to his own theses.
