Watkinson - 2006 - Journal of Applied Ecology 43 (4):617-627.
1 Evidence-based policy requires researchers to provide the answers to ecological questions that are of interest to policy makers. To find out what those questions are in the UK, representatives from 28 organizations involved in policy, together with scientists from 10 academic institutions, were asked to generate a list of questions from their organizations. 2 During a 2-day workshop the initial list of 1003 questions generated from consulting at least 654 policy makers and academics was used as a basis for (...)

A total of 944 expressed sequence tags generated 2212 EST loci mapped to homoeologous group 1 chromosomes in hexaploid wheat. EST deletion maps and the consensus map of group 1 chromosomes were constructed to show EST distribution. EST loci were unevenly distributed among chromosomes 1A, 1B, and ID with 660, 826, and 726, respectively. The number of EST loci was greater on the long arms than on the short arms for all three chromosomes. The distribution of ESTs along chromosome arms (...)

To localize wheat ESTs on chromosomes, 882 homoeologous group 6-specific ESTs were identified by physically mapping 7965 singletons from 37 cDNA libraries on 146 chromosome, arm, and sub-arm aneuploid and deletion stocks. The 882 ESTs were physically mapped to 25 regions flanked by 23 deletion breakpoints. Of the 5154 restriction fragments detected by 882 ESTs, 2043 were localized to group 6 chromosomes and 806 were mapped on other chromosome groups. The number of loci mapped was greatest on chromosome 6B and (...)

  18. China: Lore, Legend and Lyrics. [REVIEW]H. S. J. - 1960 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (1):169-169.
Obviously the work of an erudite and cultured man, this book is what it purports to be, "an informal story of China," "designed for the interested layman as well as the student rather than the specialist." Like most popularization, it suffers from oversimplification, overenthusiasm, lack of proper scholarly support for the material, and zealous digression. The somewhat stilted style is often awkward and un-English. Nevertheless, a decidedly entertaining book, distinguished by several translations of Chinese lyrics. --J. H. S.

    Hindu Gods and Hidden Mysteries. [REVIEW]H. S. J. - 1960 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (1):174-174.
The starting point for this book is the assertion that all gods are man-created, and that the Vedic gods were created in India, none being imported. The author then proceeds to examine the most important of the 33,000 Hindu gods and their worship. An enlightening introduction to the subject, aptly illustrated with quotations from the Hindu religious books, but difficult to read because of its monotonous, short, direct sentences, and its overt chauvinism. -- J. Origin and Development of Caste. [REVIEW]H. S. J. - 1960 - Review of Metaphysics 14 (1):174-175.
Part of the series, "India without Misrepresentation," this book points out that caste was not imposed by a higher group on a lower, but that it was the natural outcome of the totemic system. It has its basis in Vedic literature, in a single hymn, 'Purusha Sukta.' The author, an Indian, gives a competent and scholarly account of the history of caste and an outline of its workings and use in the India of today, pointing out the democratic aspects of (...)

Moral distress and ethical climate in intensive care medicine during COVID-19: a nationwide study.Walther N. K. A. van Mook, Sebastiaan A. Pronk, Iwan van der Horst, Elien Pragt, Ruth Heijnen-Panis, Hans Kling, Nathalie M. van Dijk, Math J. J. M. Candel, Vincent J. H. S. Gilissen & Moniek A. Donkers - 2021 - BMC Medical Ethics 22 (1):1-12.
BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has created ethical challenges for intensive care unit (ICU) professionals, potentially causing moral distress. This study explored the levels and causes of moral distress and the ethical climate in Dutch ICUs during COVID-19.MethodsAn extended version of the Measurement of Moral Distress for Healthcare Professionals (MMD-HP) and Ethical Decision Making Climate Questionnaire (EDMCQ) were online distributed among all 84 ICUs. Moral distress scores in nurses and intensivists were compared with the historical control group one year before COVID-19. ResultsThree (...)

    A Neuroscientific Perspective on the Nature of Altered Self-Other Relationships in Schizophrenia.S. J. H. Ebisch & V. Gallese - 2015 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 22 (1-2):220-240.
By empirically investigating the neural correlates of the basic experience one makes of oneself as bodily self and of its alterations, new light can be shed on the relationship between self-disturbances and social deficits in schizophrenia. We review recent neuroscientific evidence showing how a pre-reflective, experiential understanding of others can be accomplished, so that others are conceived as bodily selves by means of neural reuse of our own sensorimotor and visceromotor resources, and how a clear distinction between self and other (...)

The ethics of stem cell research: can the disagreements be resolved?J. H. Solbakk & S. Holm - 2008 - Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (12):831-832.
It is now 10 years ago that human embryonic stem cell research appeared as a major topic of societal concern following significant scientific breakthroughs.1 2 During these 10 years it has become obvious that stem cell research is embedded in a narrative characterised by hope and hype and that it has created heated moral and political debate. Although it would be tempting to try to deconstruct the importance attributed to hope in this story or to unmask the different instigators active (...)
