Im Rahmen der deduktiven Logik genügt schon ein einziger negativer Fall, um eine Allaussage als falsch zu erweisen; trotzdem bleibt bei dieser "schwachen Falsifikation" der Wahrheitswert der übrigen Fälle völlig offen. Die methodologisch relevante "starke Falsifikation", die besagt, daß auch alle künftigen Fälle negative Wahrheitswerte haben, setzt dagegen immer einen erweiternden Induktionsschluß voraus. Deshalb ist die These, daß eine wissenschaftliche Theorie ohne Bezugnahme auf das Induktionsprinzip bereits durch ein einziges Gegenbeispiel falsifiziert werden könne, nur dann haltbar, wenn man bereit ist, (...) auf jede wissenschaftliche Prognose zu verzichten. Das von K. Eichner konstruierte Gegenbeispiel ist logisch nicht stichhaltig. Trotzdem ist sein Einwand hilfreich. Er zeigt nämlich, daß die "starke Falsifikation", die notwendig ist, um die Vorschrift des Falsifikationismus zu rechtfertigen, daß eine Theorie aufgrund eines einzigen Gegenbeispiels zu verwerfen sei, durch Beobachtungsdaten widerlegt werden kann. Auf diese Weise wird erneut das Scheitern einer deduktiven Begründung für die Falsifikationsmethodologie und damit die Gültigkeit der Symmetriethese erwiesen.

In der ersten Erwiderung Eichners wurde der induktive Charakter der 'starken Falsifikation' nicht beachtet. Nunmehr bringen Eichner und Habermehl empirische Gesichtspunkte und den kategorischen Charakter der 'starken Falsifikation' ins Spiel. Dabei ignorieren sie die hier allein relevante normative Rechtfertigungsproblematik und den konditionalen Charakter der induktiven Generalisierung. Ihre Argumente können meine Symmetriethese nicht widerlegen.

In studies of the history of science two apparently diverging ‘ideal types’ can be distinguished. The internal analysis relies on methodology and on the philosophy of science and concentrates on the cognitive system and on the sequence of theories. The external analysis relies on sociology, the history of institutions, biographies, etc. and concentrates on the social system and on the interrelationship between science and society. Durch die Struktur des modernen technischen Handels ist ein ständiger ingenieurwissenschaftlicher Fortschritt vorgezeichnet: Wechselseitige Ergänzung von theoretischer Forschung und praktischer Anwendung; Selektion der effizientesten Verfahrensweise; Akkumulation des bisherigen Wissens und Könnens; Zusammenhang der technischen Teilbereiche; systematische Detailverbesserungen. Diese Prinzipien haben jedoch nur instrumenteilen Charakter. Deshalb ist es immer möglich, daß durch veränderte Prioritäten auch außertechnische Gesichtspunkte stärker zur Geltung gebracht werden.

These remarks deal with the attempt of G. Klaus to establish a theory of knowledge by combining basic ideas of cybernetics and information theory with the position of dialectical materialism. Klaus underlines the materialistic approach and the importance of science, rather than Hegelian dialectics. Irrespective of the ideological issues, the following of Klaus' suggestions are debatable: The connection between brain structure and logical reasoning. Treating information and information processing as basic notions, although this does not account for the capacity of (...) the human mind to inquire into any object whatever. Regarding the evolution of mankind as a selection process, determined by the way in which signals from the environment are selected and elaborated. Explaining creative thinking by the trial and error method. Giving a naturalistic derivation of the goals and optimation criteria of the cybernetic system 'man' exclusively from its relation to environment. (shrink)

The gap between the metatheoretical inquiries of the analytical philosophy of history, formulated in terms of general principle, and the actual research practices of the historical discipline needs to be bridged. This investigation of the determinants -preconditions, causes, factors, forces - of technological development during the Industrial Revolution makes explicit the range of theoretical instruments used in such studies. The methodologically unavoidable plurality of aspects and perspectives for each concrete inquiry precludes any generally binding model for technological development. Discussion of (...) epistemological presuppositions, by comparing various approaches, can serve to make fully conscious these presuppositions and make them accessible to analysis and criticism.
