    Motives of contributing personal data for health research: (non-)participation in a Dutch biobank.R. Broekstra, E. L. M. Maeckelberghe, J. L. Aris-Meijer, R. P. Stolk & S. Otten - 2020 - BMC Medical Ethics 21 (1):1-11.
BackgroundLarge-scale, centralized data repositories are playing a critical and unprecedented role in fostering innovative health research, leading to new opportunities as well as dilemmas for the medical sciences. Uncovering the reasons as to why citizens do or do not contribute to such repositories, for example, to population-based biobanks, is therefore crucial. We investigated and compared the views of existing participants and non-participants on contributing to large-scale, centralized health research data repositories with those of ex-participants regarding the decision to end their (...)

Proportions of the jaw mechanism of cichlid fishes changes and their meaning.E. Otten - 1985 - Acta Biotheoretica 34 (2-4):207-217.
The jaw mechanism of cichlid fishes is an intricate apparatus with complex force transmission from muscles to environment. The proportions of this apparatus change considerably during growth mainly due to scale effects. In adult fishes, the proportions differ, corresponding with the type of preferred food. In such a complex mechanism, it is very hard to gain insight into the functional meaning of the differences in proportions, unless a biomechanical model is constructed, describing kinematics and force equilibria of the apparatus.Such a (...)

    Implicit Normativity in Evidence-Based Medicine: A Plea for Integrated Empirical Ethics Research.Albert C. Molewijk, A. M. Stiggelbout, W. Otten, H. M. Dupuis & Job Kievit - 2003 - Health Care Analysis 11 (1):69-92.
This paper challenges the traditional assumption that descriptive and prescriptive sciences are essentially distinct by presenting a study on the implicit normativity of the production and presentation of biomedical scientific facts within evidence-based medicine. This interdisciplinary study serves as an illustration of the potential worth of the concept of implicit normativity for bioethics in general and for integrated empirical ethics research in particular. It demonstrates how both the production and presentation of scientific information in an evidence-based decision-support contain implicit presuppositions (...)

Ethicists differ considerably in their reasons for using empirical data. This paper presents a brief overview of four traditional approaches to the use of empirical data: “the prescriptive applied ethicists,” “the theorists,” “the critical applied ethicists,” and “the particularists.” The main aim of this paper is to introduce a fifth approach of more recent date (i.e. “integrated empirical ethics”) and to offer some methodological directives for research in integrated empirical ethics. All five approaches are presented in a table for heuristic (...)

The Ethical Mutual Fund Performance Debate: New Evidence from Canada.Rob Bauer, Jeroen Derwall & Rogér Otten - 2007 - Journal of Business Ethics 70 (2):111-124.
Although the academic interest in ethical mutual fund performance has developed steadily, the evidence to date is mainly sample-specific. To tackle this critique, new research should extend to unexplored countries. Using this as a motivation, we examine the performance and risk sensitivities of Canadian ethical mutual funds vis-à-vis their conventional peers. In order to overcome the methodological deficiencies most prior papers suffered from, we use performance measurement approaches in the spirit of Carhart (1997, Journal of Finance 52(1): 57–82) and Ferson (...)

The evolution of selective autophagy as a mechanism of oxidative stress response.Joshua Ratliffe, Tetsushi Kataura, Elsje G. Otten & Viktor I. Korolchuk - 2023 - Bioessays 45 (11):2300076.
Ageing is associated with a decline in autophagy and elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can breach the capacity of antioxidant systems. Resulting oxidative stress can cause further cellular damage, including DNA breaks and protein misfolding. This poses a challenge for longevous organisms, including humans. In this review, we hypothesise that in the course of human evolution selective autophagy receptors (SARs) acquired the ability to sense and respond to localised oxidative stress. We posit that in the vicinity of protein aggregates (...)

On knowing God: interdisciplinary theological perspectives.Jacobus Kok, Martin Webber & Jeremy Otten (eds.) - 2022 - Piscataway, NJ, USA: Gorgias Press LLC.
This book explores the concept of Knowing God and the Knowability of God from an interdisciplinary theological perspective. Approaching the issue from the perspectives of their respective theological disciplines, contributors reflect on what it means to know God, how people of faith have sought to know God in the past, and indeed whether, and to what extent, such knowledge is even possible.

Reading certainty: exegesis and epistemology on the threshold of modernity: Essays honoring the scholarship of Susan E. Schreiner.Ralph Keen, Elizabeth Palmer & Daniel Owings (eds.) - 2014 - Boston: Brill.
Reading Certainty offers incisive historical analysis of the foundational questions of the Christian tradition: how are we to read scripture, and how can we know we are saved? This collection of essays honors the work and thought Susan E. Schreiner by exploring the import of these questions across a wide range of time periods. With contributions from renowned scholars and from Schreiner's students from her more than three decades of teaching, each of the contributions highlights the nexus of certainty, perception, (...)

    From Paradise to Paradigm: A Study of Twelfth-century Humanism.Willemien Otten - 2004 - Brill's Studies in Intellectua.
This book presents a study of twelfth-century humanism seen as an all-embracing discourse in which the human and the divine interact on equal terms. The book focuses on a number of twelfth-century intellectuals, especially Thierry of Chartres, Peter Abelard, William of Conches, Bernard Silvestris, and Alan of Lille. Defining characteristic of their texts is the fact that God, nature and humanity enter into a trialogue of sorts involving many disparate subjects and aiming to bring out the archetypal relatedness of all (...)

In The Shadow Of The Divine: Negative Theology And Negative Anthropology In Augustine, Pseudo‐Dionysius And Eriugena.Willemien Otten - 1999 - Heythrop Journal 40 (4):438–455.
This article takes its starting‐point in the current resurgence of interest in negative theology. Being especially prevalent among postmodern thinkers, this interest coincides with a strong conviction concerning the absence of the divine. In the postmodern context the interest in negative theology leads quite naturally into a debate on negative anthropology, as humanity's increasing awareness of its own finitude appears to reflect a similar break with the metaphysics of being. To analyze the tradition of negative theology, the article goes back to (...)

Reviving the Logical Connection Argument.James Otten - 1977 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy 7 (4):725-743.
The logical connection argument claims that since the relation between a want and the supposedly resultant action is " logical " in nature, Whereas the relation between any cause and its effect must be contingent in nature, A want therefore cannot be the cause of an action. I consider four classical formulations of the lca, And review various objections that have been brought against them. Then I present my own formulation of the lca, Which is immune to such objections. I (...)
