  2. Disability and the love of wisdom.Amos Yong - 2009 - Ars Disputandi 9:54-71.
This essay interrogates traditional approaches to philosophy of religion from a disability perspective, rethinking issues in theodicy, epistemology, and questions of death/afterlife commonly treated in traditional philosophy of religion texts. When applied to topics in the philosophy of religion, disability perspectives require revision of the questions that have been formulated and reconsideration of solutions that have been proposed. I argue that when the human experience of disability is injected into this conversation, one of the results is a ‘performative philosophy of (...)

Disability Theology of the Resurrection: Persisting Questions and Additional Considerations – A Response to Ryan Mullins.Amos Yong - 2014 - Ars Disputandi 12 (1):4-10.
In his recent Ars Disputandi article, ‘Some Difficulties for Amos Yong’s Disability Theology of the Resurrection,’ Ryan Mullins argues that Yong’s proposals are fundamentally misguided by Stanley Hauerwas’ dictum – which states that to ‘eliminate the disability means to eliminate the subject’ – and that therefore Yong’s disability theology of the resurrection body encounters potentially insuperable difficulties or is not sufficiently justified in the face of more traditional accounts. In response to Mullins’ criticisms, clarifications are offered (...)

In the Enneads Plotinus articulates an account of ‘creation’ following in the tradition, albeit critically, of Plato’s Timaeus. This article compares Hart’s account of creation, as expressed in The Beauty of the Infinite: The Aesthetics of Christian Truth , and other secondary literature, with that of Plotinus’s. Some significant differences and interesting parallels are highlighted.

Ecumenical and Traditioned Measurement: Measuring Christian Maturation Across Distinct Traditions of Christian Spirituality.Willem van Vlastuin, Amos Yong, William Dillard, Shawn Strout, Alexis Abernethy, David C. Wang & Steven L. Porter - 2021 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 14 (2):137-161.
The aim of this article is to explore some of the challenges of measuring Christian spiritual development across distinct traditions of Christian spirituality. This presses into questions of what might be universal and what might be particular when it comes to Christian spirituality in how it is understood and practiced. We address the feasibility of a general, ecumenical measure by hearing from representative voices of five traditions of Christian spirituality: African American spirituality, Anglican spirituality, Benedictine spirituality, Pentecostal spirituality, and Reformed (...)

  8. Natural laws and divine intervention: What difference does being pentecostal or charismatic make?Amos Yong - 2008 - Zygon 43 (4):961-989.
The question about divine action remains contested in the discussion between theology and science. This issue is further exacerbated with the entry of pentecostals and charismatics into the conversation, especially with their emphases on divine intervention and miracles. I explore what happens at the intersection of these discourses, identifying first how the concept of "laws of nature" has developed in theology and science and then probing what pentecostal-charismatic insights might add into the mix. Drawing from the triadic and evolutionary metaphysics (...)

The Cosmic Breath: Spirit and Nature in the Christianity-Buddhism-Science Trialogue.Amos Yong - 2012 - Brill.
The interjection of pneumatology in both theologies of interreligious dialogue and in the theology-and-science conversation comes together in this volume. The resulting Christianity-Buddhism-science trialogue opens up to new pneumatological perspectives on philosophical cosmology and anthropology in interdisciplinary and global context.

Christian and buddhist perspectives on neuro psychology and the human person: Pneuma and pratityasamutpada.Amos Yong - 2005 - Zygon 40 (1):143-165.
. Recent discussions of the mind‐brain and the soul‐body problems have been both advanced and complexified by the cognitive sciences. I focus explicitly here on emergence, supervenience, and nonreductive physicalist theories of human personhood in light of recent advances in the Christian‐Buddhist dialogue. While traditional self and no‐self views pitted Christianity versus Buddhism versus science, I show how the nonreductive physicalist proposal regarding human personhood emerging from the neuroscientific enterprise both contributes to and is enriched by the Christian concept of (...)

    Divining "divine action" in theology-and-science: A review essay.Amos Yong - 2008 - Zygon 43 (1):191-200.
Abstract. The topic of divine action has been central to the theology‐and‐science discussion over the last twenty years. Some tentative conclusions are currently being drawn in light of research initiatives that have been engaged on this topic. I review three recent books that have responded in some way to the ongoing discussion. These responses show that, notwithstanding the advances made in the conversation, much work remains to be done before a plausible theory of divine action emerges at the interface of theology (...)

Methodologies of Comparative Philosophy: The Pragmatist and Process Traditions.Amos Yong - 2010 - American Journal of Theology and Philosophy 31 (3):266-269.
Robert Smid is senior lecturer in philosophy and religion at Curry College in Milton, Massachusetts. This book, a slightly revised version of his recent PhD dissertation from Boston University, is dedicated to Robert Cummings Neville, under whose guidance it was originally written. As the title suggests, this volume explores various methods of comparative philosophers in the pragmatist and process traditions of American philosophy. Smid thus focuses his analytic lens on William Ernest Hocking (1873–1966), F. S. C. Northrop (1893–1992), the collaborative (...)

    Toward a Relational Apologetics in Global Context. [REVIEW]Amos Yong - 2012 - Philosophia Christi 14 (2):451-459.
Classical apologetic strategies are in dire straits, according to some experts, particularly in a postmodern, post-Western, post-Enlightenment, and post-Christian world. Benno van den Toren confronts these questions head-on while proposing a methodologically sophisticated and theologically robust rationale for a dialogically oriented Christian apologetics. Christian Apologetics as Cross-Cultural Dialogue invites conversation about epistemological, dialogical, ecclesiological, eschatological, and christological matters, all of which suggest that a new paradigm of apologetics may be on the horizon for evangelical philosophy and theology. Those who disagree (...)

The reference to man as animal rationale has traditionally been used to highlight rationality as marking a qualitative gap between human beings and animals. This assumption has been questioned in a similar way by the approaches of Alasdair MacIntyre and John Dewey, who agree that before we can make adequate sense of man’s rationality, we have to draw attention to animality as the common trait of human and nonhuman living beings. However, while MacIntyre takes human dependence to show ‘why human (...)
