Good decision vs. good results: Outcome bias in the evaluation of financial agents.Christian König-Kersting, Monique Pollmann, Jan Potters & Stefan T. Trautmann - 2020 - Theory and Decision 90 (1):31-61.
We document outcome bias in situations where an agent makes risky financial decisions for a principal. In three experiments, we show that the principal’s evaluations and financial rewards for the agent are strongly affected by the random outcome of the risky investment. This happens despite her exact knowledge of the investment strategy, which can, therefore, be assessed independently of the outcome. The principal thus judges the same decision by the agent differently, depending on factors that the agent has no influence (...)

    Drei Theorien der Macht.Wolfgang Kerstìng - 1991 - Analyse & Kritik 13 (2):134-154.
In distinguishing and describing three types of theories of power, i. e. the concept of subjectivity-based power, the concept of system-based or structuralist power and the concept of intersubjectivity-based power, this paper analyses and discusses in detail the communitarian concept of power invented and developed by Hannah Arendt and criticizes her thesis of politics and community being independent of any considerations concerning normative truth.

Corona und das vernachlässigte kritische Potenzial politischer Solidarität.Michael Reder, Daniel Kersting & Franziska Dübgen - 2022 - Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 70 (1):157-171.
COVID-19 and its social and political consequences have led to increased attention to the sometimes philosophically neglected concept of solidarity. This paper reflects the discourse on solidarity in times of COVID-19 from the viewpoint of the philosophical debate on solidarity. We argue that currently – regarding this debate – the critical potential of solidarity as a political concept is often undermined. Solidarity should rather be used as a social-diagnostic lens to focus on and criticise problematic exclusions caused by current political (...)

Philosophie aktuell – Organtransplantation II: Aufklärung und Vertrauen. Gibt es eine moralische Pflicht zur Organspende? – Organtransplantation und Aufklärung – Achtung der Autonomie gegenüber Organspendern? – Vertrauen ist gut? Mitnichten immer!Andrea Esser, Daniel Kersting, Thomas Gutmann, Theda Rehbock & Peter Dabrock - 2013 - Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 61 (1):137-146.
Dealing with the reform of the Transplantation Law, the first issue of the new rubric “Philosophie aktuell” met with strong and lively interest from our readers. Subsequent to this discussion a growing number of reports were published dealing with violations of mandatory rules of conduct in transplantation medicine. Therefore the topic is revisited here from the slightly different vantage point “organ transplantation II: elucidation and confidence”.

A complete translation of Aristotle's classic that is both faithful and readable, along with an introduction that provides the modern reader with a means of understanding this seminal work and its impact on our culture. In this volume, Joe Sachs (translator of Aristotle's _Physics, Metaphysics,_ and the _Nicomachean Ethics _)also supplements his excellent translation with well-chosen notes and glossary of important terms. Focus Philosophical Library translations are close to and are non-interpretative of the original text, with the notes and a (...)

From Stimulus to Science.W. V. Quine - 1995 - Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press.
    W. V. Quine is one of the most eminent philosophers alive today. Now in his mid-eighties he has produced a sharp, sprightly book that encapsulates the whole of his philosophical enterprise, including his thinking on all the key components of his epistemological stance--especially the value of logic and mathematics. New readers of Quine may have to go slowly, fathoming for themselves the richness that past readers already know lies between these elegant lines. For the faithful there is much to ponder. (...)

The main interest of the doctrine of duties in the 18th century aims at the systematic differentiation of two classes of duties known as perfect and imperfect duties, as negative and positive duties, as duties of abstinence and duties of performance, as duties of debtiness and duties of conscience and benevolence. This paper follows the history of this differentiation and classification of the duties from Grotius, Pufendorf, Leibnitz, Thomasius, Mendelssohn and the early Kantians to Kant, especially to the Kant of (...)

    Understanding Curved Spacetime.Magdalena Kersting & Rolf Steier - 2018 - Science & Education 27 (7-8):593-623.
According to general relativity, we live in a four-dimensional curved universe. Since the human mind cannot visualize those four dimensions, a popular analogy compares the universe to a two-dimensional rubber sheet distorted by massive objects. This analogy is often used when teaching GR to upper secondary and undergraduate physics students. However, physicists and physics educators criticize the analogy for being inaccurate and for introducing conceptual conflicts. Addressing these criticisms, we analyze the rubber sheet analogy through systematic metaphor analysis of textbooks (...)

While the idea of philosophy as conceptual analysis has attracted many adherents and undergone a number of variations, in general it suffers from an authority problem with two dimensions. First, it is unclear why the analysis of a concept should have objective authority: why explicating what we mean should express how things are. Second, conceptual analysis seems to lack intersubjective authority: why philosophical analysis should apply to more than a parochial group of individuals. I argue that Hegel’s conception of social (...)

    Aristotle: Selections.W. D. Aristotle & Ross - 1955 - Hackett Publishing Company.
_Selections_ seeks to provide an accurate and readable translation that will allow the reader to follow Aristotle's use of crucial technical terms and to grasp the details of his argument. Unlike anthologies that combine translations by many hands, this volume includes a fully integrated set of translations by a two-person team. The glossary--the most detailed in any edition--explains Aristotle's vocabulary and indicates the correspondences between Greek and English words. Brief notes supply alternative translations and elucidate difficult passages.

    Physics.Daniel W. Aristotle & Graham - 2018 - Hackett Publishing Company.
The _Physics_ is a foundational work of western philosophy, and the crucial one for understanding Aristotle's views on matter, form, essence, causation, movement, space, and time. This richly annotated, scrupulously accurate, and consistent translation makes it available to a contemporary English reader as no other does—in part because it fits together seamlessly with other closely associated works in the New Hackett Aristotle series, such as the _Metaphysics_, _De Anima_, and forthcoming _De Caelo_ and _On Coming to Be and Passing Away_.
