This volume, entitled "Collectanea Augustiniana," commemorates the celebration at Villanova University of the sixteenth centenary of the conversion and baptism of St. Augustine. Subtitled "Augustine: -Second Founder of the Faith-," the volume is divided into six sections. In the first, 'Conversion in the "Confessiones"', five authors discuss aspects of Augustine's conversion. The second section, 'Literary Structure in the "Confessiones"', is devoted to six analyses of the arrangement of Augustine's spiritual autobiography. The third section, "The City of God," contains four essays (...) on Augustine's theology of history. The fourth section, 'Augustinian Biblical Exegesis', presents six studies of Augustine's interpretation of Holy Writ. The fifth section, 'Influences on Augustine', is given over to four examinations of Augustine's philosophical background. This book contains a group of essays by internationally recognized scholars on Augustine's hermeneutical theory and practice of biblical exegesis attempting to understand Augustine (1) against his own intellectual background, (2) within his own works, and (3) in relation to traditional and contemporary discussions of biblical hermeneutics and exegesis. In the discussion of Augustine's theological works and pastoral sermons, consideration is given both to the science of hermeneutics and the art of exegesis. This volume, entitled "Augustine: Mystic and Mystagogue," studies the origins of Augustine's mystical writings, analyzing texts in which Augustine describes his own anagogic experiences and mysticism in general, and demonstrating the influence of Augustine's mystical analyses on later writers. The book is divided into four parts. In the Introduction, the editors posit critical questions concerning the nature of mysticism and present a monograph from the mid-1930's in English translation, wherein the author critiques many ascensional passages in Augustine. In the section (...) on Augustine as Mystic, eight authors assess Augustine's descriptions of his own ascents-of-mind, and his generalizations upon them. In the section on the influence of Augustine's mysticism, ten authors examine the sway exercised by Augustine over medieval mystical writings. Finally, in the Conclusion, the editors of this volume express their own judgments concerning Augustine as both mystic and mystagogue and present the assessments of two other authors. (shrink)
