Lectures on the History of Philosophy 1825-6: Volume 1: Introduction and Oriental Philosophy.Robert F. Brown & Peter C. Hodgson (eds.) - 2009 - Oxford University Press UK.
This new edition of Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy sets forth clearly, for the first time for the English reader, what Hegel actually said. These lectures challenged the antiquarianism of Hegel's contemporaries by boldly contending that the history of philosophy is itself philosophy, not just history. It portrays the journey of reason or spirit through time, as reason or spirit comes in stages to its full development and self-conscious existence, through the successive products of human intellect and activity. Divine Omniscience, Immutability, Aseity and Human Free Will: ROBERT F. BROWN.Robert F. Brown - 1991 - Religious Studies 27 (3):285-295.
If classical Western theism is correct that God's timeless omniscience is compatible with human free will, then it is incoherent to hold that this God can in any strict sense be immutable and a se as well as omniscient. That is my thesis. ‘Classical theism’ shall refer here to the tradition of philosophical theology centring on such mainstream authors as Augustine, Anselm, and Aquinas. ‘Divine omniscience’ shall mean that the eternal God knows all events as a timeless observer of them. Brown and Hodgson present a new English edition of Hegel's 1822-3 lectures on the philosophy of world history. Here he sets out his vision of the development of reason, spirit, and culture in human history, as it advances inexorably towards the establishment of a political state of free, fully self-conscious individuals and just institutions.

    Resources In Schelling For New Directions In Theology.Robert F. Brown - 1990 - Idealistic Studies 20 (1):1-17.
The nineteenth-century philosopher F. W. J. Schelling exerted considerable influence on Christian theology, although among his contemporaries he is typically assigned a lesser role in this respect than is Hegel or Schleiermacher. During his lifetime his impact was greatest upon Roman Catholic theologians; after his death it was more strongly felt by certain Protestants. I shall not explore instances of Schelling’s actual influence on specific theologians, even though more research could be done on that topic. Instead my purpose is to (...)

    A Report on the Historical-Critical Edition of Schelling’s Works.Robert F. Brown - 1980 - The Owl of Minerva 11 (3):2-4.
A new edition of Schelling’s works is now in production. The Schelling-Kommission of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Munich is both the sponsor and also the central workplace for the necessary research and editorial labors. The monumental project eventually will consist of some 80 volumes, although it will surely not be completed for several decades. The official title of the new edition is: Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, Historisch-Kritische Ausgabe. Based on the evidence of the initial volume, a handsome work (...)

The Hegel Lectures SeriesSeries Editor: Peter C. HodgsonHegel's lectures have had as great a historical impact as the works he himself published. Important elements of his system are elaborated only in the lectures, especially those given in Berlin during the last decade of his life. The original editors conflated materials from different sources and dates, obscuring the development and logic of Hegel's thought. The Hegel Lectures series is based on a selection of extant and recently discovered transcripts and manuscripts. The (...)

Hegel: Lectures on the History of Philosophy: Volume III: Medieval and Modern Philosophy, Revised Edition.Robert F. Brown (ed.) - 2009 - Oxford University Press.
Hegel's interpretation of the history of philosophy played a central role in the shaping of his own thought, and brought about one of the determining events of modern intellectual history: the rise of a new historical consciousness of human life, culture, and intellect. This third volume of the lectures covers the medieval and modern periods.

Hegel gave various lecture series on aesthetics or the philosophy of art, but never published a book of his own on this topic. His famous works on aesthetics were compiled from transcripts of lectures. This volume now presents one transcript complete in English for the first time, with extensive introductory material.

    Response to Doctor Marti.Robert F. Brown - 1984 - The Owl of Minerva 15 (2):157-160.
Fritz Marti is a “true believer” in the transcendental method of philosophy pioneered by Fichte and modified by Schelling. With it he links the Augustinian religious theme that at the very center of our own self-conscious life we can encounter God who is our ground. Marti ranges freely between these Augustinian and idealist anchors, reading intervening figures such as Descartes and Kant in their terms. The result is his own vital personal testimony, a philosophico-religious “profession of faith” that illumines the (...)

    The Transcendental Fall In Kant and Schelling.Robert F. Brown - 1984 - Idealistic Studies 14 (1):49-66.
I have argued elsewhere that the traditional Augustinian account of the fall is conceptually defective. It offers causal explanations for the first instance of willing evil which violate affirmations of divine goodness and justice integral to Christian thought. Augustine is the most influential spokesperson for the conviction that the first human pair initiated fallenness on the earth by decisions and actions they took within time though indeed very near to time’s beginning. A supporting account, embellished imaginatively by the tradition, enlarges (...)

Attempt at a Critique of All RevelationThe Unconditional in Human Knowledge: Four Early Essays. [REVIEW]Robert F. Brown - 1981 - The Owl of Minerva 13 (2):4-5.
It should be no surprise to discover a young author quite without embarrassment writing under the intellectual influence of a predecessor. These new translations permit the English reader to observe two keen philosophical minds in the making. Each blatantly commandeers themes from another, yet adapts and extends them in accord with his own developing originality. Viewing them together is doubly interesting because one of our philosophers is literary mentor to the other. In present company somewhat a late starter, Fichte at (...)

Bruno, Or On the Natural and the Divine Principle of Things. [REVIEW]Robert F. Brown - 1987 - Idealistic Studies 17 (1):79-81.
This new English rendition of Schelling’s foray into the genre of the philosophical dialogue significantly enhances the growing list of SUNY Press titles on German idealism. Bruno, published in 1802, is the centerpiece of his “identity-philosophy” writings. These in turn are the culmination and attempted reconciliation of the “idealist” and “realist” strains in his earlier thought, the high-water mark of the rational system Schelling was soon to challenge and modify as a result of his subsequent fascination with the will, evil, (...)

    Schelling’s Idealism and Philosophy of Nature. [REVIEW]Robert F. Brown - 1978 - The Owl of Minerva 9 (3):5-7.
According to the accepted view the enterprise of Naturphilosophie was one of the weakest points of German idealism. The idealists stood on firmer ground in venturing upon transcendental reflection and the ensuing reformulation of classical epistemology, or in probing the nature of human freedom and the metaphysics of spirit via innovative analyses of historical-social development in politics, art, religion, and philosophy itself. But they were maladroit at bringing the burgeoning knowledge of the natural sciences within the scope of their systems. (...)

The negative emotions generated following stressful life events can increase one’s risk of depressive symptoms and promote higher levels of perceived stress. The process model of emotion regulation can help distinguish between adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies to determine who may be at the greatest risk of worse psychological health across the lifespan. Heart rate variability may affect these relationships as it indexes aspects of self-regulation, including emotion and behavioral regulation, that enable an individual to dynamically adapt to the (...)

This paper is the first phase of a longitudinal study of the class of 2014 on the effectiveness of ethics education at a business university. This phase of the project establishes the baseline attributes of incoming college freshmen with a pretest of the students’ ethical proclivity as measured by Defining Issues Test (DIT-2) scores. The relationship between the students’ ethical reasoning and their behavior in experimental stock trading sessions is then examined. In the trading simulations, randomly selected students were provided (...)

A categorical, higher dimensional algebra and generalized topos framework for Łukasiewicz–Moisil Algebraic–Logic models of non-linear dynamics in complex functional genomes and cell interactomes is proposed. Łukasiewicz–Moisil Algebraic–Logic models of neural, genetic and neoplastic cell networks, as well as signaling pathways in cells are formulated in terms of non-linear dynamic systems with n-state components that allow for the generalization of previous logical models of both genetic activities and neural networks. An algebraic formulation of variable ‘next-state functions’ is extended to a Łukasiewicz–Moisil (...)

The Cultural Production of Social Movements offers a theory of cultural practices, protest tactics, strategic planning and deliberation, and movement organizational structures: “ideological contention.” It is a theory of ideology “from below.” The Cultural Production of Social Movements shows how conflicts—both with external political forces and disagreements, dissensus, and the decision-making process internal to social movements—produce knowledge and meanings that, in turn, impact upon and change the practices that contribute to how social movements are structured and organized. The Cultural Production (...)
