The German philosopher Robert Spaemann provides an important contribution to a number of contemporary debates in philosophy and theology, opening up possibilities for conversation between these disciplines. He engages in a dialogue with classical and contemporary positions and often formulates important and original insights which lie beyond common alternatives. In this study Holger Zaborowski provides an analysis of the most important features of Spaemann's philosophy and shows the unity of his thought. The question 'Who is a person?' is (...) of increasing significance: Are all human beings persons? Are there animals that can be considered persons? What does it mean to speak of personal identity and of the dignity of the person? Spaemann provides an answer to these questions: Every human being, he argues, is a person and, therefore, 'has' his nature in freedom. In order to understand the person, Spaemann explains, we have to think about the relation between nature and freedom and avoid the reductive accounts of this relation prevalent in important strands of modern thought. Spaemann develops a challenging critique of modernity, incorporating analysis of modern anti-modernisms and showing that these are also subject to a dialectical development, perpetuating the problematic shortcomings of many features of modern reasoning. If we do not want to abolish ourselves as persons, Spaemann reasons, we need to find a way of understanding ourselves that evades the dialectic of modernity. Thus, he reminds his readers of 'self-evident' knowledge: insights that we have once already known, but tend to forget. (shrink)

Damit liegen in diesem Band einige der wichtigsten Beiträge aus Heideggers Spätwerk vor, in dem er sich kritisch mit der Geschichte der Metaphysik auseinandersetzt und sich in der Begegnung mit Kunst, Dichtung und der vorsokratischen Philosophie um neue Wege des Denkens bemüht. Heideggers Verstrickung in den Nationalsozialismus war schon immer Gegenstand großer Kontroversen, doch gab es seit den Forschungen von Hugo Ott von vor 20 Jahren keine neuen Materialien mehr, auf deren Basis Heideggers Wirken beurteilt werden konnte. Holger Zaborowski hat nun erstmals umfassend bisher unbekannte Dokumente gesichtet und kann ein ganz neues und nüchternes Bild des großen Philosophen im Nationalsozialismus zeichnen.

Die zweisprachige wissenschaftliche Fachzeitschrift enthält ausschließlich Originalbeiträge und ist prinzipiell für alle Richtungen der Religionsphilosophie und der philosophischen Theologie offen. Mit Erscheinen des Bandes 18 wird das Jahrbuch eingestellt.

Martin Heidegger hat sich in seinem Denken immer wieder mit Fragen der Logik auseinandergesetzt. Die Beiträge dieses Bandes gehen dem Verhältnis Heideggers zur Logik nach und zeigen, inwiefern es möglich ist, Heideggers gesamten Denkweg als den Denkweg eines Logikers zu bezeichnen.

En el siguiente artículo se aborda la interpretación de Heidegger del tratado de la libertad de Schelling en las dos lecciones dedicadas a esta obra sostenidas en los años 1936 y 1941. En un primer momento me referiré al carácter autorreferencial de la aproximación heideggeriana a la obra de Schelling en 1936. En este curso Heidegger sitúa a Schelling más allá del idealismo alemán y encuentra en él los impulsos necesarios para un nuevo comienzo del pensar, en correspondencia con la (...) tarea programática del propio Heidegger en los años 30. A continuación me enfocaré en el giro radical de la interpretación heideggeriana con relación a Schelling en el curso de 1941, cuando al igual que a Hegel lo considera un exponente más de la metafísica absoluta del idealismo alemán. This paper examines Nietzsche’s philosophical self-understanding and focuses particularly on the concept of intellectual honesty. It discusses, first, thewritings of his middle period, particularly Human, All Too Human, Daybreak, and The Gay Science, and analyses Nietzsche’s critique of religion, Christianity, andWestern philosophy and science. In so doing, it introduces his (Socratic) emphasis on the role of modesty and intellectual honesty as a key to understanding his(early and) middle philosophy. The paper then moves on to show that and why his later (...) philosophical works express less of a concern for intellectual honesty thanhis earlier works. It examines the radical (Dionysian) character of Nietzsche’s later philosophy and draws attention to the intrinsic paradoxes of his later thought. Itthus discusses an important development in Nietzsche’s philosophy and dialectic within modern thought that deserves close attention if an adequate understanding of the course of modern thought is at stake. This essay first discusses modern wars and the idea of?eternal peace? as developed in modernity. It shows how in the 20th century the reality of war was already transformed due to the development of new technologies such as the nuclear bomb. Now, peace was replaced by a?cold war?. The essay then goes on to introduce the concept of post-national wars. It argues that this concept fails fully to describe contemporary warfare. What is needed is a deeper analysis that considers most (...) recent technological developments such as the world wide web or drone technology and the way these technologies paradigmatically change the concept and reality of war. The essay concludes by arguing that the moral and legal challenges of this kind of war deserve more attention than they are getting in the current discussion. nema. (shrink)

Christoph Asmuth’s Das Begreifen des Unbegreiflichen is one of the most comprehensive and advanced studies yet of the development and character of Fichte’s philosophy between 1800 and 1806. Asmuth’s detailed and yet very accessible analysis, which is the published version of his doctoral thesis, focuses particularly on the second 1804 lecture series of the Science of Knowledge and upon the 1806 Way Towards the Blessed Life. It lays particular emphasis upon Fichte’s philosophy of religion, and upon Fichte’s assessment of his (...) thought with regard to Christian doctrine. A fundamental concern of this study is Fichte’s idiosyncratic examination of the activity of thinking, and how the thinking can become aware of the absolute. Asmuth also aims at providing the reader with a comprehensive account of the Science of Knowledge as the thinking’s enquiry into itself and into its foundation. The comprehending of the incomprehensible precisely as the incomprehensible is the crucial act of thinking for Fichte, for the incomprehensible cannot be understood but precisely as incomprehensible. Asmuth examines the genesis of this act by a performance of Fichte’s Science of Knowledge. It is the act in which knowing which tends to know something, nihilates itself. It leads progressively to absolute Reason, pure Being, light, or God as the absolute immanence and the essential Being of thinking. (shrink)

Der neue Band des Heidegger-Jahrbuchs widmet sich dem Verhältnis Heideggers zu Husserl. Die Herausgeber folgen damit dem in den vergangenen Jahren gewachsenen Interesse, hervorzuheben, dass die beiden Freiburger Phänomenologen ein gemeinsames Set phänomenologischer Fragen verbindet, anstatt sie je für sich zu diskutieren.

Konrad Feiereis (1931-2012) hat mit Glaubenden wie Nichtglaubenden über Religion und Gesellschaft diskutiert. Der Christliche Philosoph verfügte über die Gabe, selbst im kämpferischen Atheisten den suchenden Anderen, Nachbarn und Dialogpartner zu erkennen - dabei entwickelte er im Weltanschauungsstaat DDR herausragende hermeneutische Fähigkeiten. Die Herausgeber möchten an diesen bedeutenden katholischen Intellektuellen erinnern und laden dazu ein, Feiereis in seinen Texten zu begegnen.

The well-known formal semantics of conditionals due to Stalnaker Studies in logical theory, Blackwell, Oxford, 1968), Lewis, and Gärdenfors The logic and 1140 epistemology of scientific change, North-Holland, Amsterdam, 1978, Knowledge in flux, MIT Press, Cambridge, 1988) all fail to distinguish between trivially and nontrivially true indicative conditionals. This problem has been addressed by Rott :345–370, 1986) in terms of a strengthened Ramsey Test. In this paper, we refine Rott’s strengthened Ramsey Test and the corresponding analysis of explanatory relations. In this paper, we propose a regularity theory of causation. The theory aims to be reductive and to align with our pre‐theoretic understanding of the causal relation. We show that our theory can account for a wide range of causal scenarios, including isomorphic scenarios, omissions, and scenarios which suggest that causation is not transitive.
