    Problems and paradigms: Morphogens and pattern formation.Carl Neumann & Stephen Cohen - 1997 - Bioessays 19 (8):721-729.
Morphogen gradient theories have enjoyed considerable popularity since the beginning of this century, but conclusive evidence for a role of morphogens in controlling multicellular development has been elusive. Recently, work on three secreted signalling proteins, Activin in Xenopus, and Wingless and Dpp in Drosophila, has stongly suggested that these proteins function as morphogens. In order to define a factor as a morphogen, it is necessary to show firstly, that it has a direct effect on target cells and secondly, that it (...)

Promoting Ethical Judgment in an Organisational Context.Stephen Cohen - 2013 - Journal of Business Ethics 117 (3):513-523.
The essay argues that individual ethical judgment is a necessary ingredient in an organisation’s ethical performance. Attempts to systematise judgment, removing it from individual responsibility are not successful, and sometimes can even be counterproductive. Focus on systems of accountability can actually detract from the production of ethical behaviour. A number of examples are provided. Although it is much more difficult to produce, individual responsible decision-making and individual judgment should be the features that an organisation focuses on in its interest to (...)

Early last year, the GenEthics Consortium (GEC) of the Washington Metropolitan Area convened at George Washington University to consider a complex case about genetic testing for Alzheimer disease (AD). The GEC consists of scientists, bioethicists, lawyers, genetic counselors, and consumers from a variety of institutions and affiliations. Four of the 8 co-authors of this paper delivered presentations on the case. Supplemented by additional ethical and legal observations, these presentations form the basis for the following discussion.

  18. Commonplace Moraliser: Insights and Outrages.Stephen Cohen - 1993 - Upa.
Aimed at a wide audience, this book in the general area of practical ethics consists of seven independent and humorous philosophical analyses of common moral situations, occurrences, and confrontations. The introduction discusses the idea of moralising; Cohen explains what it is, why moral philosophers tend to avoid it, and why it seems a particularly worthwhile enterprise for the book. Throughout its discussions, the book is accessible to readers at any stage of philosophic interest. The author distinguishes between moral encounters (...)

Controlling growth of the wing: Vestigial integrates signals from the compartment boundaries.Stephen M. Cohen - 1996 - Bioessays 18 (11):855-858.
In the past few years it has become apparent that the anterior/posterior (A/P) and dorsal/ventral (D/V) compartmant boundaries serve as the source of longrange signals that organize the A/P and D/V axes of the Drosophila wing. Recent work suggests that the vestigial gene may function as a nodal point through which the growth‐controlling activity of these two patterning systems is integrated(1).

    Moral Reasons, Moral Action, and Rationality.Stephen Cohen - 1982 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy 12 (3):557 - 577.
I want to examine a relationship between rationality and moral behavior. To do this, I shall first set out some basic intuitions. Then, within that framework I shall raise a problem about the relationship between rationality and moral behavior; in particular, I shall suggest that present in these basic intuitions is an inconsistency which can be remedied only by a radical alteration of one intuition. It is rational to perform a morally right action. The sense of this claim is fairly clear, (...)

    Proof and Sanction in Mill's Utilitarianism.Stephen Cohen - 1990 - History of Philosophy Quarterly 7 (4):475 - 487.
The essay examines Mill's proof of the utilitarian principle in Utilitarianism and attempts to articulate what Mill himself would have regarded as the proof. It is suggested that the easiest construction of the proof would involve Mill in conflating the proof with the sanction for the principle. Other possibilities--including, in the end, the possibility which this essay favors--require that important steps in the proof be regarded as immediate or intuitive, rather than supported by reasons. Questions are raised concerning what Mill (...)

Truisms in Business Ethics.Stephen Cohen - 1999 - Business and Professional Ethics Journal 18 (3-4):47-56.
A truism is something which is perceived to be not only true, but obviously true-so obvious as to warrant no investigation into it, and so, obvious that it can be taken as an unquestionable starting point, or assumption, from which to proceed further. In this essay, I want to call attention to a few not-so-true truisms about ethics, ethics consulting, and ethics training in business. Most of the truisms that I want to touch on have acquired particularly high status: "axioms" (...)

  32. The Nature of Moral Reasoning: The Framework and Activities of Ethical: The Framework and Activities of Ethical Deliberation, Argument, and Decision—Making.Stephen Cohen - 2004 - Oxford University Press Anz.
The Nature of Moral Reasoning is a discussion about the landscape, or environment, in which moral reasoning occurs. The book engages the reader in an examination of the processes involved in thinking about moral matters. The theoretical underpinnings of moral reasoning are explained carefully in the context of an examination about what it means to engage in the central activity of moral reasoning. The discussion is both theoretical and practical and is about where moral reasoning is located, and how it (...)

The Problem of the Problem of Akrasia.Stephen Cohen - 1986 - Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 67 (1):62.
The essay is concerned to explain what the conditions are which make for a "problem of "akrasia"," i.E., What the ingredients of the problem are. It is suggested that a number of attempts to solve the problem are wanting, In that they fail to address the correct, Generic, Problem, A problem which, Among other things which it is not, Is not a peculiarly moral problem. The essay suggests that "assent" is the key notion, And that the problem of "akrasia" should (...)

Intuitive Dualism and Afterlife Beliefs: A Cross‐Cultural Study.H. Clark Barrett, Alexander Bolyanatz, Tanya Broesch, Emma Cohen, Peggy Froerer, Martin Kanovsky, Mariah G. Schug & Stephen Laurence - 2021 - Cognitive Science 45 (6):e12992.
It is widely held that intuitive dualism—an implicit default mode of thought that takes minds to be separable from bodies and capable of independent existence—is a human universal. Among the findings taken to support universal intuitive dualism is a pattern of evidence in which “psychological” traits (knowledge, desires) are judged more likely to continue after death than bodily or “biological” traits (perceptual, physiological, and bodily states). Here, we present cross-cultural evidence from six study populations, including non-Western societies with diverse belief (...)

Punishment: A Philosophy and Public Affairs Reader.A. John Simmons, Marshall Cohen, Joshua Cohen & Charles R. Beitz (eds.) - 1994 - Princeton University Press.
The problem of justifying legal punishment has been at the heart of legal and social philosophy from the very earliest recorded philosophical texts. However, despite several hundred years of debate, philosophers have not reached agreement about how legal punishment can be morally justified. That is the central issue addressed by the contributors to this volume. All of the essays collected here have been published in the highly respected journal Philosophy & Public Affairs. Taken together, they offer not only significant proposals (...)
