In this essay I offer some suggestions for integrating film in an Ethics classes and reaching your goals in terms of learning and student outcomes. You can easily adapt them to other areas of Philosophy— not just Ethics. Starting with Aristotle’s Poetics as a tool for deconstructing movies, I set out five strategies for teaching Ethics through film: start with a film or ethical theory; start with a real-world case or an ethics code; then use any of these four in (...) combination to allow for a more in-depth analysis. In this chapter, I examine the ways in which “harsh interrogationInterrogation” methods, such as indefinite detention, hooding, use of vicious brutality (such as the use of dogs), and force-feedingForce feeding, function as acts of tortureTorture. Although singularly they may only be “abusive,” when used together or in tandem (“clustering”), they cross the line into torture. TortureTorture is an issue of public moralityMorality. My focus is on the role of medical professionals who have enabled torture by standing by, keeping silent, or (...) actively participating in the abuse of detaineesDetainees. To understand how this occurs, we need to look at the context and the ways the language as well as the practice have an effect. For example, there is widespread use of euphemisms; e.g., “stress positions,” “sleep adjustment,” “takeout,” and “waterboardingWaterboarding” to create a climate of acceptance. Key medical associations such as the American Medical Association (AMA) and the World Medical Association have issued declarations prohibiting doctorsDoctors from participating and calling for them to step forward. However, we must go beyond whistle-blowers taking personal risks, however commendable, and, thus, put in place scaffolding to make it easier to report and investigate suspected abuse or torture. This book brings into sharp relief the extent to which the medical profession has enabled or participated in actions that are at moral crossroads. Physical and psychological abuse and violations of medical codes have already been brought to light by concerned bioethicists responding to ethical lapses of the “war on terror.” This book goes to the next level by looking at three areas that also merit our attention and call us to speak out against abuses. These are dehumanization, non-consensual forced-feeding, (...) and solitary confinement. Each area raises important questions for the medical profession. Author Wanda Teays calls upon doctors and nurses to reflect on the role they play in the unethical treatment of prisoners and detainees by crossing moral boundaries around each of these areas. In this chapter I will look at three forms of online abuse: Posting non-consensual nude photographs or videos, Cyberstalking, and Doxing—publishing private information that could lead to identity theft. The result can be loss of jobs, electronic surveillance, threatened rape or murder, scare tactics and being targeted for unwanted attention. The essays in this book engage the original and controversial claims from Michael Boylan's A Just Society. Each essay discusses Boylan's claims from a particular chapter and offers a critical analysis of these claims. Boylan responds to the essays in his lengthy and philosophically rich reply.

This article examines the extent to which diversity characteristics and stakeholder role influence individuals’ corporate social orientation (CSO). Our findings indicate that one’s relationship to the organization as well as diversity, gender, and race influence one’s CSO. Specifically, we found that employees’ greatest concern was economic whereas customers had a stronger ethical orientation. The results also suggest that women as well as Black employees and customers place more emphasis on whether an organization is fulfilling its discretionary responsibilities than do males (...) and Whites.
