Examining homology in biological and cultural evolution is of great importance in investigations of humanity. The proposal presented in the target article retains substantial methodological weaknesses in the identification and use of “cultural traits.” However, with refined toolkits and the incorporation of recent advances in evolutionary theory, this overall endeavor can result in substantial payoffs for biological and social scientists.

This book sets out some of the latest scientific findings around the evolutionary development of religion and faith and then explores their theological implications. This unique combination of perspectives raises fascinating questions about the characteristics that are considered integral for a flourishing social and religious life and allows us to start to ask where in the evolutionary record they first show up in a distinctly human manner. The book builds a case for connecting theology and evolutionary anthropology using both historical (...) and contemporary sources of knowledge to try and understand the origins of wisdom, humility, and grace in 'deep time'. In the section on wisdom, the book examines the origins of complex decision-making in humans through the archaeological record, recent discoveries in evolutionary anthropology, and the philosophical richness of semiotics. The book then moves to an exploration of the origin of characteristics integral to the social life of small-scale communities, which then points in an indirect way to the disposition of humility. Finally, it investigates the theological dimensions of grace and considers how artefacts left behind in the material record by our human ancestors, and the perspective they reflect, might inform contemporary concepts of grace. This is a cutting-edge volume that refuses to commit the errors of either too easy a synthesis or too facile a separation between science and religion. As such, it will be of interest to scholars of religious studies and theology - especially those who interact with scientific fields - as well as academics working in anthropology of religion. In recent years ever-increasing concerns about ethical dimensions of fieldwork practice have forced anthropologists and other social scientists to radically reconsider the nature, process, and outcomes of fieldwork: what should we be doing, how, for whom, and to what end? In this volume, practitioners from across anthropological disciplines-social and biological anthropology and primatology-come together to question and compare the ethical regulation of fieldwork, what is common to their practices, and what is distinctive to each discipline. Part of the task in studying human evolution is developing a deep understanding of what we share, and do not share, with other life, as a mammal, a primate, a hominin, and as members of the genus Homo. A key aspect of this last facet is gained via the examination of the genus Homo across the Pleistocene. By at least the later Pleistocene members of the genus Homo began to habitually insert shared meaning into and onto their world forming one (...) of the bases of contemporary human abilities to develop a distinctive human niche and human culture. Meaning-laden cultural dynamics constitute the core of a ubiquitous semiotic ecosystem, which in turn structures the architecture of the complex niches and niche construction processes that characterize humanity today. Here, I offer a summary of Pleistocene evolution of the genus Homo and an argument for when and how that extensive and distinctive capacities for shared meaning-making and a particularly dynamic niche construction emerged. Important advances in biomedical and behavioral research ethics have occurred over the past few decades, many of them centered on identifying and eliminating significant harms to human subjects of research. Comprehensive attention has not been paid to the totality of harms experienced by animal subjects, although scientific and moral progress require explicit appraisal of these harms. Science is a public good and the prioritizing within, conduct of, generation of, and application of research must soundly address questions about which research is (...) morally defensible and valuable enough to support through funding, publication, tenure, and promotion. The target article takes myriad human female patterns and aligns them as a unit emerging from an expanded version of “staying alive” theory. Females and males do differ, however, to treat the complexity of human response to threats as an explicit, evolved sexually dimorphic package is not reflective of current knowledge regarding health, sex/gender, and behavior in Homo sapiens.

Cesario misrepresents or ignores data on real-world racist and sexist patterns and processes in an attempt to discredit the assumptions of implicit bias experimentation. His position stands in stark contradiction to substantive research across the social sciences recognizing the widespread, systematic, and structuring processes of racism and sexism. We argue for centering the relationship between structural racism and individual bias.

The target article effectively assesses multiple hypotheses for human sexuality, demonstrating support for a complex, integrated perspective. However, care must be taken when extrapolating human universal patterns from specific cultural subsets without appropriate ethnographic contexts. Although it makes a strong contribution to the investigation of human sexuality, the basal reliance on a reductionist perspective constrains the full efficacy of this research.

Heritability is not a measure of the relative contribution of nature vis-à-vis nurture, nor is it the phenotypic variance explained by or because of genetic variance. Heritability is a correlative value. The evolutionary and developmental processes associated with human culture challenge the use of “heritability” for understanding human behavior.

Conditional mating strategies and within-sex variation in mating patterns occur across a wide range of primate taxa. Attempts to model the evolution of human mating strategies should incorporate current primatological data sets and phylogenetic perspectives. However, comparisons between interview and questionnaire-based human behavioral data and observationally and experimental generated nonhuman behavioral data should be conducted with prudence.

The adaptationist and exaptationist programs overlap in their need for a pluralistic approach to understanding evolutionary change, and Andrews et al. effectively illustrate the methodological confounds of these approaches. However, the current critique of adaptationism, especially in the arena of human behavior, rests on the tendency to rapidly reify adaptationist hypotheses prior to broad evidentiary consensus across relevant disciplines.

Data from archaeology and paleoanthropology directly challenge the validity of the basic assumptions of the CLASH model. By not incorporating a “deep time” perspective, the hypothesis lacks the evolutionary baseline the authors seek to infer in validating the model.

The risks of harm to nonhuman primates, and the absence of benefits for them, are critically important to decisions about nonhuman primate research. Current guidelines for review and practice tend to be permissive for nonhuman primate research as long as minimal welfare requirements are fulfilled and human medical advances are anticipated. This situation is substantially different from human research, in which risks of harms to the individual subject are typically reduced to the extent feasible. A risk threshold is needed for (...) the justification of research on nonhuman primates, comparable to the way risk thresholds are set for vulnerable human subjects who cannot provide informed consent. This letter addresses the editorial decision to publish the article, “Research on group differences in intelligence: A defense of free inquiry” (Cofnas, 2020). Our letter points out several critical problems with Cofnas's article, which we believe should have either disqualified the manuscript upon submission or been addressed during the review process and resulted in substantial revisions.

The explanatory value of niche construction can be strengthened by firm footing in semiotic theory. Anthropologists have a unique perspective on the integration of such diverse approaches to human action and evolutionary processes. Here, we seek to open a dialogue between anthropology and biosemiotics. The overarching aim of this paper is to demonstrate that niche construction, including the underlying mechanism of reciprocal causation, is a semiotic process relating to biological development as well as cognitive development and cultural change. In making (...) this argument we emphasize the semiotic mechanisms underlying the niche concept. We argue that the “niche” in ecology and evolutionary biology can be consistent with the Umwelt of Jakob von Uexkull. Following John Deely we therefore suggest that investigations into the organism—environment interface constituting niche construction should emphasize the semiotic basis of experience. Peircean signs are pervasive and allow for flexible interpretations of phenomena in relation to the perceptual and cognitive capacities of the behaving organism, which is particularly pertinent for understanding the relation of proximate/ultimate selective forces as co-productive. Additionally, theoretical work by Kinji Imanishi on the evolution of daily life and Gregory Bateson’s relational view of evolution both support the linkage between proximate and ultimate evolutionary processes of causation necessitated by the niche construction perspective. We will then apply this theoretical framework to two specific examples: 1) hominin evolution, including uniquely human cultural behaviors with niche constructive implications; and 2) the multispecies and anthropocentric niche of human-dog coevolution from which complex cognitive capacities and semiotic relationships emerged. The intended outcome of this paper is the establishment of concrete semiotic mechanisms and theory underlying niche constructive behavior which can then be applied to a broad spectrum of organisms to contextualize the reciprocal relation between proximate and ultimate drivers of behavior. ABSTRACT:A wide range of research uses patterns of genetic variation to infer genetic similarity between individuals, typically referred to as genetic ancestry. This research includes inference of human demographic history, understanding the genetic architecture of traits, and predicting disease risk. Researchers are not just structuring an intellectual inquiry when using genetic ancestry, they are also creating analytical frameworks with broader societal ramifications. This essay presents an ethics framework in the spirit of virtue ethics for these researchers: rather than focus on (...) rule following, the framework is designed to build researchers’ capacities to react to the ethical dimensions of their work. The authors identify one overarching principle of intellectual freedom and responsibility, noting that freedom in all its guises comes with responsibility, and they identify and define four principles that collectively uphold researchers’ intellectual responsibility: truthfulness, justice and fairness, anti-racism, and public beneficence. Researchers should bring their practices into alignment with these principles, and to aid this, the authors name three common ways research practices infringe these principles, suggest a step-by-step process for aligning research choices with the principles, provide rules of thumb for achieving alignment, and give a worked case. The essay concludes by identifying support needed by researchers to act in accord with the proposed framework. (shrink)

The purpose of our letter is not to invite Cofnas’s contribution into a broader dialogue, but to respectfully voice our concerns about the decision to publish the manuscript, which, in our opinion, fails to (...) meet a range of academic quality standards usually expected of academic publications. En este artículo se revisa la noción jurídica y moral de dignidad personal, más allá de los enfoques realistas y constructivistas tout court, para llegar a colocar de relieve modos de sufrimiento y experiencias del daño. Las herramientas con las que cuentan habitualmente las perspectivas jurídicas y morales al momento de identificar y juzgar cursos de acción no parecen ser suficientes si fijamos la atención en la fragilidad y la precariedad ontológica que caracteriza a la subjetividad. Indicar la naturaleza relacional (...) de la dignidad, y solventar la perjudicial adherencia entre lo jurídico y lo moral como consecuencia de su empleo, serán objetivos perseguidos en el artículo, al desembarazarse de enfoques realistas o naturalistas y rechazar cualquier atisbo romanticista que no considere las disonancias requeridas para la dignidad o exponga a los menos aventajados ante situaciones injustificadas de poder y dominación. La Teoría Crítica contemporánea presenta un curioso movimiento. Mientras que, por un lado, solicita las categorías de Marx para dar cuenta del fenómeno reciente de la crisis del capitalismo neoliberal; al mismo tiempo, reconoce que esa teoría no puede decirlo todo, requiriendo de un acercamiento de su perspectiva hacia objetos y problemas ajenos, acaso obstruidos por los límites al interior de los cuales se habría desplazado su pensamiento. Una de las fuentes de inspiración más poderosas de este movimiento de (...) ampliación cuyo saldo no es sino una verdadera heteroglosia filosófica, se encuentra en la teoría del espíritu del idealismo alemán, más precisamente en sus modulaciones hegelianas. El regreso a Hegel vendría motivado por la necesidad de indagar, como se observa en la obra de Axel Honneth, en los dilemas de los vínculos humanos en un mundo social signado por el fenómeno de la fragmentación. En este escrito nos detendremos en analizar algunos elementos de un reciente debate al interior de la Teoría Crítica contemporánea acerca del problema de la articulación entre reconocimiento y libertad, reconstruyendo las distintas estrategias de lectura de Hegel que aquí se ponen en movimiento. Ortega no estudió de manera concreta el tema de la religión. Sin embargo, a lo largo de su obra, encontramos muchas y variadas referencias a cuestiones religiosas. Parte de ellas se refieren, sobre todo en su juventud, a un personal modo de concebir la religión: como afirmación de la vida, respeto y fidelidad a uno mismo y a su circunstancia. Además de las fuentes de inspiración en Goethe o Renan, es indispensable, para comprender esta concepción, contar con las problemáticas (...) religiosas de la época. Éstas se enclavan en la circunstancia por excelencia del pensamiento de Ortega: el problema de España, y su atraso científico y cultural respecto a Europa. (shrink)

El empeño de claridad ilimitada del pensamiento fenomenológico no se distingue de la vocación de iluminar y orientar la acción humana en medio de la Historia y sus desastres. El redescubrimiento, nunca agotado, de las fuentes vivas del sentido (fenomenología genética) y la meditación sobre la experiencia radical del sentido (el mundo de la vida), sirven, de la mano del último Husserl, de Patocka, de Michel Henry, para sugerir que también la Historia terrible de nuestro siglo es, a la (...) inversa, pieza básica de contraste de la vitalidad de la fenomenología. El artículo pone de manifiesto las fuentes cristianas de la doctrina trinitaria en los primeros Diálogos de Agustín, contestando a las ideas de O. du Roy y señalando el influjo de Ambrosio y Mario Victorino.

El artículo estudia la fuente varroniana de la exposición que de las artes liberales hace san Agustín en la segunda parte del "De ordine". Primero demuestra que la interpretación que de esa sección da I. Hadot es excesivamente neoplatónica. Después presenta argumentos nuevos a favor de la inspiración varroniana del discurso agustiniano sobre las artes liberales.

El robo que san Agustín declara haber cometido a sus dieciséis años en sus Confesiones ha sido objeto de interpretaciones de diversa índole. Aquí, mediante el tratamiento de algunas de ellas y de los textos fuente en los que se apoyan, se propone una nueva lectura que toma como fundamento una óptica aún no delineada en los estudios agustinianos. A través de la aplicación de la perspectiva hermenéutica propuesta hace algunas décadas por el historiador francés René Girard, se advierte que (...) el relato del robo de las peras constituye un episodio afín al mensaje revelado por las Escrituras en torno a la naturaleza del deseo humano. Se elabora una exégesis que, tomando en consideración interpretaciones precedentes, se distancia a su vez de algunos de sus fundamentos, con el fin de profundizar su alcance y demostrar que el episodio en cuestión, en conformidad con el mensaje cristiano, revela el carácter conflictivo de la naturaleza mimética del deseo.
