Sigmoid functions have been applied in many areas to model self limited population growth. The most popular functions; General Logistic (GL), General von Bertalanffy (GV), and Gompertz (G), comprise a family of functions called Theta Logistic ( $$ \Uptheta $$ L ). Previously, we introduced a simple model of tumor cell population dynamics which provided a unifying foundation for these functions. In the model the total population ( N ) is divided into reproducing ( P ) and non-reproducing/quiescent ( Q (...) ) sub-populations. The modes of the rate of change of ratio P / N was shown to produce GL, GV or G growth. We now generalize the population dynamics model and extend the possible modes of the P / N rate of change. We produce a new family of sigmoid growth functions, Trans-General Logistic (TGL), Trans-General von Bertalanffy (TGV) and Trans-Gompertz (TG)), which as a group we have named Trans-Theta Logistic ( T $$ \Uptheta $$ L ) since they exist when the $$ \Uptheta $$ L are translated from a two parameter into a three parameter phase space. Additionally, the model produces a new trigonometric based sigmoid ( TS ). The $$ \Uptheta $$ L sigmoids have an inflection point size fixed by a single parameter and an inflection age fixed by both of the defining parameters. T $$ \Uptheta $$ L and TS sigmoids have an inflection point size defined by two parameters in bounding relationships and inflection point age defined by three parameters (two bounded). While the Theta Logistic sigmoids provided flexibility in defining the inflection point size, the Trans-Theta Logistic sigmoids provide flexibility in defining the inflection point size and age. By matching the slopes at the inflection points we compare the range of values of inflection point age for T $$ \Uptheta $$ L versus $$ \Uptheta $$ L for model growth curves. (shrink)

The growth characteristics of the recently derived Trans-Gompertz function are compared to those of the Generalized Logistic function. Both functions are defined by one shaping parameter and one rate parameter. The functions are matched at a specified point on the growth curve by equating both the first and second derivatives. Analysis shows that the matched Trans-Gompertz function will have grown at a faster rate with a larger inflection point ratio.

This project was undertaken to develop a telelearning knowledge base aimed at making specialized telelearning knowledge accessible to non-specialized practitioners in the field. The challenge stems from a rationale related to a user-centered approach for the software design process, which is focused on learning in the context of professional practice, the bridge to be built between expert and practitioner knowledge, as well as the knowledge valorization of the latter. In order to take into account users and their situated actions, a (...) usage study was integrated in the analysis phase. This study allows the creation of procedural and contextual telelearning models, and also lists of needs. These results serve as a basis for formulating guidelines for the development of ontologies, for the design of the telelearning knowledge base user interface and telelearning knowledge base environmental description. Auguste Comte (1798–1857) is the founder of positivism, a philosophical and political movement which enjoyed a very wide diffusion in the second half of the nineteenth century. It sank into an almost complete oblivion during the twentieth, when it was eclipsed by neopositivism. However, Comte's decision to develop successively a philosophy of mathematics, a philosophy of physics, a philosophy of chemistry and a philosophy of biology, makes him the first philosopher of science in the modern sense, and his constant attention (...) to the social dimension of science resonates in many respects with current points of view. His political philosophy, on the other hand, is even less known, because it differs substantially from the classical political philosophy we have inherited. -/- Comte's most important works are (1) the Course on Positive Philosophy (1830-1842, six volumes, translated and condensed by Harriet Martineau as The Positive Philosophy of Auguste Comte); (2) the System of Positive Polity, or Treatise on Sociology, Instituting the Religion of Humanity, (1851-1854, four volumes); and (3) the Early Writings (1820-1829), where one can see the influence of Saint-Simon, for whom Comte served as secretary from 1817 to 1824. The Early Writings are still the best introduction to Comte's thought. In the Course, Comte said, science was transformed into philosophy; in the System, philosophy was transformed into religion. The second transformation met with strong opposition; as a result, it has become customary to distinguish, with Mill, between a “good Comte” (the author of the Course) and a “bad Comte” (the author of the System). Ranging from Alan Turing’s seminal 1936 paper to the latest work on Kolmogorov complexity and linear logic, this comprehensive new work clarifies the relationship between computability on the one hand and constructivity on the other. The authors argue that even though constructivists have largely shed Brouwer’s solipsistic attitude to logic, there remain points of disagreement to this day. Focusing on the growing pains computability experienced as it was forced to address the demands of rapidly expanding applications, the content maps the (...) developments following Turing’s ground-breaking linkage of computation and the machine, the resulting birth of complexity theory, the innovations of Kolmogorov complexity and resolving the dissonances between proof theoretical semantics and canonical proof feasibility. Finally, it explores one of the most fundamental questions concerning the interface between constructivity and computability: whether the theory of recursive functions is needed for a rigorous development of constructive mathematics. This volume contributes to the unity of science by overcoming disunities rather than offering an overarching framework. It posits that computability’s adoption of a classical, ontological point of view kept these imperatives separated. C'est pour penser les rapports de la science à la technique, et plus généralement de celles-ci à la société, que le concept positif d'industrie a été forgé. Dans le premier cas, on montre comment le rapport s'inverse selon que l'on considère l'essor spontané des sciences ou leur développement systématique, et l'on rappelle la nécessité de distinguer entre applications théoriques et applications pratiques, seules à relever de la technique proprement dite. Que comprenons-nous du monde dans lequel nous vivons? Alors que celui-ci est entièrement pénétré par les technologies numériques, alors qu'elles modifient en profondeur nos pratiques intellectuelles, nous manquons singulièrement de moyens pour les comprendre. Puisque les machines et les algorithmes constituent une partie de notre réalité, il est de première importance, non seulement de savoir utiliser les outils numériques, mais, plus profondément, de s'approprier ce nouvel univers symbolique auquel nous appartenons tous.

Le siècle qui approche sera-t-il placé sous le signe de Comte à la façon dont celui qui s’achève aura été placé sous le signe de Marx? Il y a de bonnes raisons d’en douter: outre qu’il n’y a pas lieu de souhaiter au positivisme un «triomphe» analogue à celui du communisme, il serait surprenant qu’un auteur qui a commencé sa carrière en déclarant que «l’erreur des peuples est beaucoup plus difficile à déraciner que celle des rois» devienne du jour au (...) lendemain populaire. Divers indices donnent toutefois à penser que le fondateur de la sociologie serait sur le point de sortir du long purgatoire auquel nos contemporains l’avaient condamné. Le fait est qu’on pouvait difficilement aller plus loin dans l’injustice. La langue elle-même en porte témoignage, puisque «positiviste» en est presque venu à signifier scientiste, matérialiste, soit le contraire de ce pour quoi le mot avait été forgé. Il y a gros à parier que la majorité de nos compatriotes ignore tout simplement que la politique a dominé l’œuvre de celui qui déclarait à l’âge de vingt-quatre ans: «Les savants doivent aujourd’hui élever la politique au rang des sciences d’observation. Tel est le point de vue culminant et définitif auquel il faut se placer». (shrink)

A grammar is primarily a device which accounts for the underlying processes of sentence formation. How does this idea arise? Chapter four of Syntactic Structures, dedicated to the relationship between generative grammar and distributionnal syntax, does not stress this point. It is not sufficient to set forth the failure of discovery procedures, because Chomsky, in order to solve the problem of justification, uses quite a similar method to his predecessors'. The concept of grammar appears only in reference to the problem (...) of projection. But it belongs to psychology. It aims to account for the use of language and to contribute to a model of performance. The linguist's strategy would then be dictated to him by psychology. (shrink)

Writing from a scientifically and philosophically informed perspective, the authors provide a critical overview of the conceptual difficulties encountered in many current neuroscientific and psychological theories.

A long-standing theme in discussion of perception and thought has been that our primary cognitive contact with individual objects and events in the world derives from our perceptual contact with them. When I look at a duck in front of me, I am not merely presented with the fact that there is at least one duck in the area, rather I seem to be presented withthisthing (as one might put it from my perspective) in front of me, which looks to (...) me to be a duck. Furthermore, such a perception would seem to put me in a position not merely to make the existential judgment that there is some duck or other present, but rather to make a singular, demonstrative judgment, that that is a duck. My grounds for an existential judgment in this case derives from my apprehension of the demonstrative thought and not vice versa. (shrink)

L’idée d’ordre spontané occupe chez Hayek une place centrale, puisqu’il en fait le fondement à la fois de la science sociale et du libéralisme. Une première partie rappelle qu’il s’agit d’abord d’une notion épistémologique, nécessaire là où les phénomènes deviennent trop complexes pour qu’on puisse en dégager des lois. La seconde partie, qui traite de la théorie de la catallaxie, ou ordre spontané du marché, est centrée sur la notion de concurrence, conçue comme une procédure de découverte apportant une solution (...) au problème posé par la division du savoir et assurant une coordination sans coordinateur. La dernière partie, qui examine les différents types d’intervention, permis ou proscrits, souligne combien le bon fonctionnement de cet ordre spontané dépend en fait de conditions juridiques qu’il est demandé à l’État d’imposer. Résumé La défense du marché dans la tradition socialiste libérale est instrumentale : le marché est toléré lorsqu’il permet de produire des richesses en abondance que l’on peut redistribuer ex post. De son côté, la justification républicaine du marché, telle que présentée dans les travaux de Pettit, vise à réduire la domination dans l’échange. Cet article soutient qu’une telle justification nécessite d’être renforcée en l’adossant à un égalitarisme matériel, garant d’un échange entre égaux, établi ex ante.
