John R. Searle’nin Çin Odası Argümanı oldukça ilgi çekici ve üzerinde çokça tartışılmış bir argümandır. Argümanın ilgi çekiciliğini günümüzün en baskın zihin kuramlarından biri olan kompütasyonalizmi hedef almasına, üzerinde çokça tartışılmasını ise felsefi implikasyonlarının hayli zengin olmasına bağlayabiliriz. Searle, argümanının beynin kelimenin tam anlamıyla bir bilgisayar, zihnin de bir bilgisayar programı olduğunu ileri süren kompütasyonalizmin kesin ve net bir reddi olarak görse de, bize ve birçoklarına göre argüman onun düşündüğü kadar ikna edici değildir. Bu çalışmada Çin Odası Argümanı Searle’nin genel (...) zihin anlayışı zemininde incelenecek ve argümana verilen yaygın cevaplar değerlendirilerek argümanın neden ikna edici olmadığı gösterilmeye çalışılacaktır. This paper explores early Australasian philosophy in some detail. Two approaches have dominated Western philosophy in Australia: idealism and materialism. Idealism was prevalent between the 1880s and the 1930s, but dissipated thereafter. Idealism in Australia often reflected Kantian themes, but it also reflected the revival of interest in Hegel through the work of ‘absolute idealists’ such as T. H. Green, F. H. Bradley, and Henry Jones. A number of the early New Zealand philosophers were also educated in the idealist tradition (...) and were influential in their communities, but produced relatively little. In Australia, materialism gained prominence through the work of John Anderson, who arrived in Australia in 1927, and continues to be influential. John Anderson had been a student of Henry Jones, who might therefore be said to have influenced both main strands of Australian philosophical thought. (shrink)

The article deals with some ideas by Turing concerning the background and the birth of the well-known Turing Test, showing the evolution of the main question proposed by Turing on thinking machine. The notions he used, especially that one of imitation, are not so much exactly defined and shaped, but for this very reason they have had a deep impact in artificial intelligence and cognitive science research from an epistemological point of view. Then, it is suggested that the fundamental concept (...) involved in Turing’s imitation game, conceived as a test for detecting the presence of intelligence in an artificial entity, is the concept of interaction, that Turing adopts in a wider, more intuitive and more fruitful sense than the one that is proper to the current research in interactive computing.
