Efforts to explicate continuity have produced a plurality of philosophical conceptions of continuity that have provably distinct expressions within contemporary mathematics.     Summary Franz Brentano, 1838–1917, introduced the intriguing concept of “plerosis” in order to account for aspects of the continuum that were “explained” by formal mathematics in ways that he considered absurd from the perspective of intuition, especially visual awareness and imagery. In doing this, he pointed in directions later developed by the Dutch mathematician Luitzen Brouwer.   • The Kripke schema in metric topology.Robert Lubarsky, Fred Richman & Peter Schuster - 2012 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 58 (6):498-501.
    A form of Kripke's schema turns out to be equivalent to each of the following two statements from metric topology: every open subspace of a separable metric space is separable; every open subset of a separable metric space is a countable union of open balls. Thus Kripke's schema serves as a point of reference for classifying theorems of classical mathematics within Bishop-style constructive reverse mathematics.

  • Indecomposability of negative dense subsets of ℝ in Constructive Reverse Mathematics.Iris Loeb - 2009 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 17 (2):173-177.
    In 1970 Vesley proposed a substitute of Kripke's Scheme. In this paper it is shown that —over Bishop's constructive mathematics— the indecomposability of negative dense subsets of ℝ is equivalent to a weakening of Vesley's proposal. This result supports the idea that full Kripke's Scheme might not be necessary for most of intuitionistic mathematics. At the same time it contributes to the programme of Constructive Reverse Mathematics and gives a new answer to a 1997 question of Van Dalen.
