This study examined elementary school teachers’ experience of pandemic preparedness efforts by provincial and local agencies in Nova Scotia, Canada during the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic. Eleven elementary teachers were surveyed and interviewed and their responses analyzed to determine themes that have pedagogical significance for both education and health promotion. Teachers surveyed experienced a profound sense of responsibility for the children for whom they act in loco parentis. Teachers perceived themselves to be infection control agents and acted on behalf of (...) students to mitigate the spread of the disease. Due to the unique relationship between elementary teachers and children there were high levels of fear and anxiety experienced. Teachers felt fearful for their personal safety and for the health and well-being of their students and reported high levels of anxiety in children. Elementary teachers, who are on the front line of pandemic response, need to be central to administrative efforts to prepare, educate and provide training for those in contact with a high number of vulnerable populations. Further research is required on the experiences of middle school, secondary teachers and principals at all levels of schooling. (shrink)

One of John Paul II’s remarkable innovations was his embrace of the question of “the meaning of life.” The question of “the meaning of life” was never asked before the 19th century, and it was slow to be integrated into Catholic discourse. When the question of life’s meaning emerged, it effectively replaced a prior question, about the purpose or te-los of life, with a very different set of theoretical assumptions. From the traditional per-spective, the question of life’s meaning is highly (...) suspicious, and even Pope John Paul II’s unparalleled embrace of the question confirms that he framed his personalism in terms of the older question of life’s purpose or telos. Desarrollo en este artículo tres planteamientos en torno a la cuestión del sentido de la vida, cada uno de ellos asociado a las nociones que figuran en su título: ambigüedad, disolución y latencia. 1) La expresión “sentido de la vida” posee al menos cuatro significados y de ello se siguen consecuencias no menores. 2) En su acepción habitual, la pregunta por el sentido puede disolverse o dejar de plantearse, cuando es sustituida por la pregunta práctica por la vida buena. 3) (...) Ello no significa que la pregunta por el sentido desaparezca del todo: ella continua latente. Pero cuando vuelve a tornarse manifiesta, ya no demanda de nosotros una respuesta. If we read the Tractatus logico-philosophicus according to the decimal numbering of its propositions, we may understand, finally, the section about the self and the limits of language and world. Proposition 5.64 follows 5.63 (not 5.634); 5.634 follows 5.633 (not 5.6331); and so on. Thus, it becomes clear that the picture of the visual field (TLP 5.6331) cannot be what scholars have always quoted and discussed, i.e. a draft of an eye inside its field of sight. Actually, Wittgenstein’s original drafts (...) depict (to criticise it) the ordinary way of representing the visual field. Following him, the field of vision is ‘without limits’; it does not have a form that implies the existence of an eye, as far as the phenomenological experience does not have a form that implies the existence of an ‘I’. As a result, the current reproductions of the 5.6331 image must be rectified, and all references to this similitude should be radically amended. (shrink)
