  1. Merging without mystery or: Variables in dynamics semantics. [REVIEW]C. F. M. Vermeulen - 1995 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 24 (4):405 - 450.
In this paper we discuss the treatment of variables in dynamic semantics. Referent systems are introduced as a flexible mechanism for working with variables. In a referent system we carefully distinguish the variables themselves both from the machinery by which we manipulate them - their names - and from the information that we store in them - their values. It is shown that the referent systems provide a natural basis for dynamic semantics. The semantics with referent systems is compared with (...)

  • A positive information logic for inferential information.Sebastian Sequoiah-Grayson - 2009 - Synthese 167 (2):409 - 431.
Performing an inference involves irreducibly dynamic cognitive procedures. The article proposes that a non-associative information frame, corresponding to a residuated pogroupoid, underpins the information structure involved. The argument proceeds by expounding the informational turn in logic, before outlining the cognitive actions at work in deductive inference. The structural rules of Weakening, Contraction, Commutation, and Association are rejected on the grounds that they cause us to lose track of the information flow in inferential procedures. By taking the operation of information application (...)

  • A multi-dimensional treatment of quantification in extraordinary English.Paul Dekker - 2008 - Linguistics and Philosophy 31 (1):101-127.
In this paper I revive two important formal approaches to the interpretation of natural language, that of Montague and that of Karttunen and Peters. Armed with insights from dynamic semantics (Heim, Krifka) the two turn out to stand up against age-old criticisms in an orthodox fashion. The plan is mainly methodological, as I only want to illustrate the technical feasibility of the revived proposals. Even so, there are illuminating and welcome empirical consequences on the subject of scope islands (as discussed (...)

  • Multi-dimensional modal logic.Maarten Marx - 1997 - Boston, Mass.: Kluwer Academic Publishers. Edited by Yde Venema.
Over the last twenty years, in all of these neighbouring fields, modal systems have been developed that we call multi-dimensional. (Our definition of multi ...
