The Higher Self is a concept introduced by Roberto Assagioli, the founder of psychosynthesis, into transpersonal psychology. This notion is explained and linked up with the Western mystical tradition. Here, coming from antiquity and specifically from the neo-Platonic tradition, a similiar concept has been developed which became known as the spark of the soul, or summit of the mind. This history is sketched and the meaning of the term illustrated. During the middle ages it was developed into a psychology of (...) mysticism by Thomas Gallus, popularized by Bonaventure, and radicalized by the Carthusian writer Hugh of Balma. Spark of the soul signifies an "organ of the mystical experience." It is argued that the split introduced into history between outer and inner experience has lain dormant ever since the 13th century, with inner experience relegated to the private and mystical realm. By introducing this concept, transpersonal psychology reconnects with this tradition and has to be aware of the legacy: to achieve the theoretical, and if possible scientific, integration of both types of experience by drawing on the experiential nature of this concept and fostering good research. The integral approach to therapy proposes to accommodate all the etiological factors of unipolar depression in its theory, as well as to make use of all existing therapies, both pharmacological and psychological, in the treatment of unipolar depression. Integral Therapy is compared to cognitive therapy to find evidence for its superiority over the cognitive approach. It appears that the cognitive therapy is more cost-effective than Integral Therapy as an individual approach in the treatment of depression, but that the integral perspective (...) accounts better for etiological factors. While addressing global problems including conflict and violence is a common human agenda, they are human-caused: They are created and sustained through our thoughts. Though external causes and conditions cannot be ignored, the most fundamental problem is an epistemological one—our way of knowing and viewing the world. As the shape of the global conditions relies on our thoughts or ways of thinking, it is imperative to make a critical analysis of our mind. This paper explores how the Buddhist philosophy of (...) human mind develops a model of global mind to achieve a peaceful future. Firstly, the analysis offers the concept of “the conditioned mind”—mind shaped by socially constructed frame of reference and examines how it becomes a cause of trouble. Secondly, it proposes the concept of “the unconditioned mind”—mind-state transcendent of an attachment to any form of frame of reference as an antidote to the potential danger of the conditioned state. Then, global mind is explored. It is characterized as the mixture of the conditioned and the unconditioned mind with the practice of multiple functions of mind—mindful practice, dialectical philosophical contemplation, and compassionate mind. The appreciation and enacting of both the conditioned mind and the unconditioned mind underpinned by the multiple functions of mind empowers us to touch universal humanity and inherent dignity of all human beings and to co-create new values, norms, and visions with those having different frames of reference to embody interdependent and interconnected human relationships. Debates concerning causal explanations of the universe tend to be based on a priori propositions . The present paper, however, addresses the metaphysical question, “Why does the universe exist?” from the perspective of a school of Hindu philosophy referred to as advaita vedanta and two of its a posteriori derived creation theories: the theory of simultaneous creation and the theory of non-causality . Objections to advaita vedanta are also discussed. It is concluded that advaita vedanta has the potential to make (...) a significant contribution to contemporary metaphysical debate in general and our understanding of the question, “Why does the universe exist?” in particular. Block has argued that the multiplicity of meanings ascribed to consciousness is due to the erroneous treatment of very different concepts as a single concept. Block distinguished four notions of consciousness intended to encapsulate the various meanings attributed to the term: phenomenal, access, self, and monitoring consciousness. We argue that what is common to all of these definitions is the implicit distinction between consciousness and the content of consciousness. We critically examine the term “altered state of consciousness” and argue that (...) affixing the qualifier “altered state” to consciousness results in a theoretical confusion of consciousness and its content, that is, consciousness is mistaken for the content of consciousness. We refer to this as the consciousness/content fallacy and argue that it may be avoided if one supplants “altered states of consciousness” with “altered pattern of phenomenal properties,” an extrapolation of the term “phenomenal field.” Implications of the consciousness/content fallacy for theory and research are also considered. A semiotic theory of systems derived from language would have the purpose of classifying all the systems of linguistic expression: philosophy, ideology, myth, poetry, art, as much as the dream, lapsus, and free association in a pluridimensional matrix that will interact with many diversified fields. In each one of these discourses it is necessary to consider a plurality of questions, the essence of which will only be comprehensible by the totality; it will be necessary to ask, in the first place, (...) what will be the purpose of this language, what function does it fulfill and for which reason has it been constructed. The concept of World vision (WV) is introduced and its relation with Generalized Collective Conscience (GCC) and Particularized Collective Conscience. Culture implies a particular WV. Culture creates GCC. The semantic field is a structure that formalizes the units of a certain culture constituting a portion of the vision of the Reality that owns this culture. This essay is a response to the recent exchange between Paul Marshall and Timothy Rutzou on critical realism and integral theory in Journal of Critical Realism 11, in which integral theory was designated by Rutzou ‘a poisoned chalice’ for critical realism. It argues that, while integral theory could benefit greatly from the adoption of critical realist ontology, metacritique and the structural analysis of politics, critical realism could benefit even more from the scientific syntheses achieved by integral theory, especially developmental psychology, (...) cultural anthropology and transpersonal psychology. Several substantial critiques remain a source of fractionalizing debate within transpersonal psychology, including the weakness of its definition, whether it is redundant with Wilber’s integral psychology, whether it is a scientific field, whether it is too metaphysical, whether it neglects the problem of evil, and what contribution can it make to mainstream psychology. This article explicates these and related areas of critique and provides a response that identifies the essential challenges and future prospects of transpersonal psychology. This paper gives continuity to the criticism, undertaken in two papers previously published in this journal, of transpersonal systems that fail to discriminate between nirvanic, samsaric, and neithernirvanic-nor-samsaric transpersonal states, and which present the absolute sanity of Awakening as a dualistic, conceptually-tainted condition. It also gives continuity to the denunciation of the false disjunction between ontogenically ascending and descending paths, while showing the truly significant disjunction to be between existentially ascending and metaexistentially descending paths. However, whereas in the preceding paper (...) the focus was on Wilber’s so-called integral system, in this paper the focus of the main body is on the systems of Washburn and Grof. It features an appendix discussing psychedelics and the use of the term entheogens in their regard, and another appendix showing Wilber’s system to give continuity to the Orphic dualism of Pythagoreans, Eleatics, and Plato, and the covert Orphic dualism of Neo-Platonics. Contemporary Western feminism and transpersonalism are kaleidoscopic, consisting of interlocking influences, yet the fields have developed in parallel rather than in tandem. Both schools of praxis developed during the climate of activism and social experimentation of the 1960s in the United States, and both share a non-pathological view of the human experience. This discussion suggests loci of synthesized theoretical constructs between the two disciplines as well as distinct concepts and practices in both disciplines that may serve the other. The practicability of the comprehensive FSR concept is problematic. Contemporary FSR must be positioned at the point of overlap between the positivist and constructivist paradigms, which are both grounded in a continual identification with the rational-empirical consciousness, in thinking -being.Spirituality, defined as the process in which one systematically trains the receptivity to gain regular access to transcendental consciousness, emphasizes the experience of just being, of consciousness-as-such. It is an experiential spirituality, which is not based on dogmas, but on do-it-yourself techniques (...) to break the continuous spell of the rational-empirical consciousness. Such a spirituality facilitates the cultivation of societally and environmentally friendly behavior. Sustainability can be defined as the integrative 'emergent property' of experiential spirituality and rational morality based on negotiated agreements.In addition to the outward-oriented approaches of the positivist and constructivist paradigms, an inward-oriented approach, focusing on consciousness development, is recommended. Language-mediated interaction must be supported by consciousness-mediated interaction. (shrink)

عرفان بی‏شک جوهر تجربۀ دینی به شمار می‏رود و این تجربه، هم برای کسانی که دارای اعتقادات مذهبی هستند، و هم برای کسانی که چنین اعتقاداتی ندارند، نوعاً باعث تغییر در زندگی می‏شود. صرف‎نظر از دشواری توصیف حالات عرفانی که از چارچوب مفهومیِ تجارب عادی بسیار دور به نظر می‏رسند، به نظر می‏رسد می‏توان شباهتهای متعددی میان این حالات در سنتهای دینی ـ عرفانی مختلف یافت. این شباهت‏ها عبارتند از: تجربۀ وحدت، احساسِ قرار داشتن در ورای زمان و مکان، احساس (...) تقدّس، احساس لذت و شادکامی، وحدتی که توام با خلاء و ملأ است، و آگاهی از یک واقعیت غایی ابدی. حالات عرفانی را در قیاس با مراقبۀ معنوی می‎توانیم به دو دسته مقولات متمایز تقسیم کنیم: تنزیهی و تشبیهی. عرفان‏های تنزیهی و تشبیهی هر چند شباهتهای قابل توجهی با یکدیگر دارند، اما به طور قطع با یکدیگر متفاوت هستند. این دو نوع گرایش عرفانی در ادیان و آیین‏های مذهبی شرق و غرب جهان به تفاوت دیده می‏شود. تفاوت‏های موجود بر سر تفسیر تجارب عرفانی ممکن است ناشی از تفاوت‏ها و تمایزات فرهنگی و زبانی باشد. تفاسیر روان‎شناختی، عصب ـ روان‎شناختی، و علوم‎شناختی از تجارب عرفانی، از مهم‏ترین رویکردها در پژوهش‏های نوین در سطح جهان محسوب می‏شود. Transpersonal psychology first emerged as an academic discipline in the 1960s and has subsequently broadened into a range of transpersonal studies. Jorge Ferrer (2002) has called for a 'revisioning' of transpersonal theory, dethroning inner experience from its dominant role in defining and validating spiritual reality. In the current paradigm he detects a lingering Cartesianism, which subtly entrenches the very subject-object divide that transpersonalists seek to overcome. This paper outlines the development and current shape of the transpersonal movement, compares Ferrer's epistemology (...) with the heterophenomenology of Daniel Dennett, and speculates on the integration of the latter into transpersonal theory. The conservation of biological diversity and the necessity of using biological resources sustainably became crucial within the socio-political milieu from the beginning of the 1990s when the global community began revisiting this issue following the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This was further augmented by the IUCN Guide that reminds parties to the CBD that in order to: i) institutionalize the development and implementation of the biodiversity strategy cycle; and ii) create an oversight mechanism, the National Biodiversity Strategy (...) and Action Plan needs to be anchored in legislation and policy. However, apart from these intricate legal paradigms, there are innate ethical frameworks of values and principles for policy options that have proven useful in combating the biodiversity challenges. Bangladesh has nearly a hundred laws that deal with numerous environment related issues including biodiversity. Additionally Bangladesh is also a party to the various international environmental instruments, including the CBD, albeit with certain reservations. The aim of this study is to investigate the extent to which the environmental legislation of Bangladesh coheres to the ethical approaches in addressing the issue of biodiversity, as well as to delve into examples of implementation. An interdisciplinary approach with legal and ethical analysis of biodiversity backed up by secondary data is used. In order to actualize the objective the study, after providing conceptual clarity on certain related issues such as ethical approaches to the environment, biodiversity and so forth, focuses on the legal framework for addressing environment and biodiversity in Bangladesh. The ethical approaches to environmental legislation and biodiversity in Bangladeshis thereafter critically appraised. The study argues and concludes that intrinsic reorientation is necessary in the way the government advocates before the environmental legislation of Bangladesh can be said to reverberate the demands of a general ethical approach to the environment and in particular to biodiversity.
