Dynamic EEG source localization by Particle Swarm Optimization

The localization of brain activity using electroencephalographic (EEG) signals is widely used in many neuroscience applications. This is an inverse problem from which from the surface cortical potentials we obtain a dipole source. This problem, to which there exists no unique solution, depends on many factors among which are the source model and the head model. Previous work addressed additional issues such as localization errors, the presence of noise and speed of computation. Moreover, in most of the methods already presented and in use, there is the need of interaction from the researcher in defining intervals and prior averaging might be necessary. In this paper we tackle these problems by using a technique called Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). This is a stochastic, population-based evolutionary computer algorithm which is inspired by the flocking and schooling behavior of birds. The computation is implemented on a spherical head model using one or two dipole sources and is focused on the potential benefit of PSO for solving dynamic problems. Indeed a starting point in time is needeed and as the scalp potentials evolve with time, the location and direction of the dipole source changes, without any user intervention, thus the task for the optimization algorithm becomes to track the shifting optimum. To ensure the dynamic tracking of the moving global minimum, the particles of the swarm are diversified by a repulsion mechanism. We evaluated this new method on simulated and real EEG data and the resulting dynamical inverse solutions, localization accuracy and performance are compared with other already existing algorithms. Possibilities of usage for an on-line, brain-computer interface system are discussed.
