Biological Determinism

Abstract

In his Novum Organum, published in 1620, Francis Bacon codified the Renaissance belief, which still prevails today, that the true goal of science is the attainment of power; that science should be used as a means to control and dominate the environment in which the human species lives. This use of science to alter the material conditions of our lives is obvious. It is not nearly so obvious that, particularly since the industrial revolution, science has also served as the tool of the dominant interests of societies to control their environment which has included the people they rule.

A vivid example of this is the new science of sociobiology.
