Why Democracy?

Abstract

I have been amazed by the breadth of the debate generated by my two articles for at least two reasons. Of the two problems I raised—that of the existence or non-existence of a political theory in Marx's thought, and that of the existence of an alternative to the model of representative democracy—I considered the first to be the more provocative. Furthermore, I thought that whichever problem was discussed, there would be more dissent than consensus. Instead, it turned out that the problem which has provoked the greater response has been the second and my account has met more approval than disapproval (even though, for whoever receives it, a disapproval usually outweighs an approval).
