AN APPEAL ΤΟ THE SUN FOR VENGEANCE (INSCRIPTIONS DE DÉLOS, 2533)

Thus the text of the edilio princeps, published by P. Roussel and M. Launey in 1937 as ID 2533, of a fragmentary inscribed stone (max. pr. H. 0.13, W. 0.215, Th. 0.055) found in 1913 on Delos near the port. Its two main difïîculties, as the editors noted in their brief commentary, are (A) -οθεΐσα in line 5, for which they suggested « σωθεΐσα ? », and (B) και ά/[τέ]κνου και βίου in unes 6-7, on which they remarked, «il semble qu'il ne manque que deux lettres au début [se. of line 7], mais la construction est peu intelligible.» Exami- nation of the stone in the island's muséum has yielded new readings that offer solutions for thèse problème and a more connected sensé for the text as a whole.1

(A) As is discernible from the photograph, the right-hand ends of lines 3 and 5-8 are fairly even with one another; in line 4, though, there is room for another letter or two after μάχαφαν, but the surface in that area is worn too badly to reveal whether it was ever inscribed. In other words, a proper diplomatie transcription would be MAXAIPAN[-"-], whether or not one might later décide, from considérations of context, that line 4 is shorter than the other lines and that [-'-] représente a surface originally blank. The left-hand end of line 5, as projected from the Σ in line 4 and the undoubtedly correct suppléments in lines 6-8, is one letter-space to the left of the editors' οθεΐσα ; in that space there is a high horizontal, from the right-hand end of which there descends what is either the upper part of a vertical

(1) I should like to thank the authorities of the French School at Athens for allowing me to examine the stone on Delos, R. Etienne for the excellent photograph, and G. W. J. Eliot, H. R. Immerwahr, and B. D. Meritt for reading earlier versions of this note and suggesting improvements.
