Abstract

As I understand the issue before us in "The Ethics of Mandatory HIV Testing in Newborns": (JCE 7, no. 1), the problem presented is one of (qualified) success. It is now possible to provide some medical interventions to fetuses and newborns at risk for HIV, interventions that hold out the hope of substantially decreasing the rate of vertical transmission. But with the good news comes the bad: this success may come at the price of putting yet additional burdens on pregnant women and mothers infected with HIV.
