Abstract

Abstract:

The paper revises Oppenheim’s 1976 hypothesis on Josiah Royce’s intellectual development in light of recent criticism by Jacquelyn Kegley. The earlier hypothesis identified three paradigm shifts in Royce’s thought, which on further reflection is found to obscure the underlying continuity in his thought. Especially the focus on the second shift—called the second “maximal insight”—obscured the fact that the 1896–1905 decade “exploded” with at least twenty significant intellectual events and insights, six of which are developed further in this paper.
