Abstract

This paper investigates musical education in Magnesia, as it is proposed in Plato’s Laws. Its roleand nature are examined in its main parts. Musical education is supposed to begin before birth,in order to prepare the child as still a fetus to choral music. Such an effort has obviously apolitical aim, for choral music connects man to the cosmos, being thus the most appropriate wayto cement the constitution, and provides a justification for the divine and human character of theconstitution as well.
