Abstract

In the penultimate paragraph of the ‘Preface’ to the Philosophy of Right, Hegel tells us that ‘the owl of Minerva begins its flight only with the falling of the dusk’ (‘die Eule der Minerva beginnt erst mit der einbrechenden Dämmerung ihren Flug’) (Hegel (1996)). In the way of striking metaphors, this has become one of his most celebrated sayings – to the point that some who know nothing else of Hegel, know this.
