2022, Forest Policy and EconomicsCitation Excerpt :In the context of public administration, co-production referred to the contribution and collaboration of citizens with governmental agencies to deliver public goods and services, including the co-production of environmental policies and outcomes related to the management of common pool resources (e.g. Ostrom and Ostrom, 1977; Parks et al., 1981). Power manifests for instance in the relations between governmental agencies and multiple societal actorsKey authors in science and technology studies, such as Jasanoff (2004) and Latour (1990), have further suggested that knowledge is inseparable from the context where it is produced, and that there is interdependence between knowledge and action. Science is thus seen as the product of research as well as politics.
Flexibility & structure: Community engagement on climate action & large infrastructure delivery
2022, Energy PolicyCitation Excerpt :Co-production has been defined whereby different stakeholders (i.e. researchers, practitioners and the public) collaborate throughout a project to share power and responsibility in the pursuit of the generation of knowledge (Hickey et al., 2018). It has developed separately across three different disciplinary traditions; public administration (Ostrom and Ostrom, 1999), science and technology studies (Latour, 1990), and sustainability science (Kates et al., 2001). Recently, with relation to sustainability, the successful co-production of knowledge has been defined as orientating around four key principles.
Co-Production in Global Sustainability: Histories and Theories
2020, Environmental Science and PolicyCitation Excerpt :Driven by an empirical turn in the sociology of science and inspired by the ideas of Kuhn (1962), this research argued against the philosophical tradition of separating science from the social contexts of its creation. Instead, it focused on the social work and organization of creating scientific institutions and ideas (Bloor, 1976; Knorr-Cetina, 1981). STS aimed to correct the theoretical flaw of assuming only false knowledge needed social explanation (Collins, 1981).
