NOTE ON IG I2, 76 (ELEUSINIAN FIRSTFRUITS DECREE)

Guillon's convincing dating {BCH 1962, pp. 470 ff. ; 8th prytany, 422/1 B. C.) enables us to reinterpret IG I2, 311 usefully. With 421/0 B. C. confirmed as intercalary McGregor's view (AJPh., 1938, pp. 158 ίϊ.) can now be further developed. The Conciliar year, when Prepis was first secretary, extended some three weeks into Aristion's archonship (421/0 B. C). In the tenth prytany of this year (late in Skirophorion, 422/1 B. C), I submit, the ίεροποιοί made their first listed payment to the έπιστάται (άπδ το σίτο τες απαρχές) ; another followed in Aristion's archonship at some date before Hekatombaion 22. No mention of the έπιστάται is made in I G I2, 76 and it may be that these payments were authorised by some clause in the decree probably passed earlier in this same tenth prytany, when Lampon's proposals for the olive-harvest απαρχή were debated in the Assembly. However this may be, both payments reflect the urgent execution by the Council in office of the provisions of I G I2, 76.
