PERSPECTIVES IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE Volume 27 ¦ Number 4 · Summer 1984 EDITORIAL: CO-WINNERS OF THE 1984 DWIGHTJ. INGLE MEMORIAL WRITING AWARD The purpose of the Dwight J. Ingle Memorial Writing Award is to encourage the writing of younger biologists and physicians. In no one has its success been so remarkable as in the case of Scott F. Gilbert. Since his participation in these contests, we have published three of his thoughtful essays. Now at the age of 34 he has with his collaborator, Jason Greenberg, won the 1984 award. Scott Gilbert is an assistant professor of biology at Swarthmore College interested primarily in developmental mammalian biology. On sabbatical leave this year, he is working at the Wistar Institute. Jason Greenberg is a second-year medical student at the Hershey Medical College. The collaboration leading to their winning presentation began with a term paper prepared when Greenberg was Gilbert's student at Swarthmore. Their paper "Intellectual Traditions in the Life Sciences.
