Tony Milligan

My work focusses upon Normative and Applied Ethics. On the Normative side, I'm interested in the stuff that isn't Kantian or Utilitarian. So I draw from virtue theory (Slote and Murdoch), American pragmatism (Taylor and Cavell) and from Wittgensteinian ethics (Diamond and Gaita). On the Applied side, my interests focus upon animals and environmental issues. My next book, a short volume on Love, will be released in the autumn, as part of Acumen's Art of Living series. Currently I'm writing a book on civil disobedience for Continuum. This will advance the view that some covert or non-public actions (e.g. animal rescue) ought to count as instances of civil disobedience. Although illegal, they have a special moral standing and deserve a special standing before the law.
