According to Fries, there are other means of justifying than the proof, and the theory of justification has to overcome the « prejudice for the proof ». Kant himself was the victim of this prejudice, because he did not make a sharp distinction between transcendental knowledge and its object (the a priori knowledge it refers to).Fries considers that the critique itself can be empirical or a posteriori without this affecting in any way the a priori status of its object. The Friesian theory of justification includes also an original theory of induction.
