The Other and Me: Interpersonal and Social Responsibility in Emmanuel Levinas

| Abstract | The present article examines and discusses the relationship between person and society on the basis of the thought of Emmanuel Levinas. The paper takes for granted that at the centre of Levinas' thought is the ethical relationship of the 'I' to the Other. But in order to speak about the Face of the Other and about its appeal to responsibility, the author reflects first on the 'I' and its anchorage in the very dynamics of being. Just as the responsibility by and for the Other does not form the starting point of Levinas' view, neither can it be considered as the end point. In this sense, the article deepens our understanding of the fact that, according to Levinas, the recognition of the 'third party' demands from us the broadening of the concept of interpersonal responsibility into a social and political responsibility. The intention of the article, thus, is to underline the fact that Levinas makes a very important contribution to social personalism. Moreover, the author also makes explicit how Levinas' ethical view on interpersonal and social responsibility leads to a clear redefinition of the human subject. In this sense, Levinas appears here as a radical anti-Hobbesian, even though initially his view on the 'I' as the eminent expression of being seems rather to evoke the contrary. /// O presente artigo analisa e discute a estreita e fundamental relação que existe entre pessoa e sociedade a partir do pensamento de Emmanuel Levinas. Com efeito, o artigo assume como dado o facto de que no centro do pensamento de Levinas está a relação ética do "Eu" com o Outro. Mas em ordem a efectivamente falar acerca do Rosto do Outro e acerca do seu apelo à Responsabilidade, o autor do artigo reflecte em primeiro lugar sobre a natureza do "Eu" e a sua inscrição na dinâmica própria do ser. Assim, tal como a responsabilidade por e para o Outro não forma o ponto de arranque da interpretação de Levinas, assim também não o podemos considerar, diz o autor do artigo, como ponto de chegada. Deste modo, o artigo aprofunda a nossa compreensão do facto de que, de acordo com Levinas, o reconhecimento do Terceiro exige do nosso pensamento um alargamento do conceito de responsabilidade interpessoal à sua dimensão social e política. Nessa medida, o artigo pretende sobretudo sublinhar o facto de que Levinas é um autor de grande importância para uma correcta interpretação do personalismo social. Mais ainda, o autor torna igualmente explícito de que modo a visão ética de Levinas acerca da responsabilidade social e interpessoal não pode deixar de nos conduzir a uma clara redefinição da natureza do sujeito humano. Em suma, Levinas aparece-nos neste artigo como sendo um anti-hobbe-siano radical, mesmo se a sua interpretação inicial do "Eu" como expressão eminente do ser parece disso mesmo evocar o contrário. | |||||||||
