Universality of Socio‐moral Development: a cross‐sectional study in Poland

Journal of Moral Education 25 (4):441-453 (1996)
Abstract
Abstract Lawrence Kohlberg's theory postulates a universal model of moral development. According to Kohlberg's cognitive?development theory, moral judgement represents underlying thought organisation rather than specific responses. Although the specific content of moral judgement may vary among cultures, the basic structures are said to be universal. Our cross?sectional study has been undertaken to test the validity of Kohlberg's measure in a Polish sample. The data were gathered between 1985?87. The sample includes 291 men and women, 15?80 years of age. This paper presents the results of the Polish study, which generally support Kohlberg's claim of cross?cultural universality
