The Splendor of Truth in Fides et Ratio: Alethic Realism and Dominus Jesus

| Abstract | This article critically examines three philosophical presuppositions that Dominus Jesus holds have hindered the reception of the Christian truth claim regarding the exclusive, universal, and absolute revelation of Jesus Christ. The ineffability of divine truth, relativistic attitudes toward truth itself, and the rejection of the Principle of Contradiction are the three presuppositions examined Against this background, the author examines John Paul Il's analysis of the nature and extent of the crisis of truth in contemporary culture, especially as he presents it in Fides et Ratio. The article offers a critical analysis of relativistic attitudes toward truth, setting forth the implications of a relativistic notion of truth for the nature of theological faith. It concludes with John Paul Il's defense of a realist notion of truth in Fides et Ratio, especially as this notion bears on the intelligibility of the Christian faith. /// O presente artigo analisa criticamente três dos pressupostos que a Dominus Jesus considera serem limitativos de uma recepção da asserção veritativa do cristianismo a propósito do carácter exclusivo, universal e absoluto da revelação em Jesus Cristo. A inefabilidade da verdade divina, as atitudes relativistas acerca da verdade e a rejeição do Princípio de Contradição são três dos pressupostos analisados. Neste contexto, o autor estuda a análise que João Paulo Il faz acerca da natureza e da extensão da crise da verdade na cultura contemporânea, particularmente tal como a apresenta na Fides et Ratio. O artigo oferece uma análise crítica de atitudes acerca da verdade, apresentando as implicações de uma noção re-lativista de verdade no que se refere à natureza da fé teológica, O autor conclui com a defesa que João Paulo II faz na Fides et Ratio de uma noção realista de verdade, particularmente na medida em que esta se revela ser uma noção relevante para a inteligibilidade da fé cristã. | |||||||||
