Abstract

In an attempt to clarify and strengthen the thesis that theory choice is a form of value judgment, I elaborate a central point advanced by Kuhn and McMullin and defend it from what appears to be a criticism by Laudan. I explore some aspects of the process by giving several realistic examples, by reconstructing some of the underlying reasoning, and by discussing several kinds of agreement and disagreement that result. Despite the considerable work that remains to be done, there seems to be no doubt that theory choice is simultaneously a form of evaluation, of judgment, and of reasoning.
