Abstract

Troeltsch's typology of religious association is not only a descriptive sociological model, but also a normative model which reflects Troeltsch's preference for the church type. The definition of the types is affected by Troeltsch's own philosophy of religion and conception of Christianity. The result is that the typology does not adequately illuminate the religious groups Troeltsch categorizes as sect and mystic types.
