Abstract

O presente artigo faz um percurso através da obra de Teilhard de Chardin em ordem a propor um novo modelo de relações entre Ciência e Teologia. Toma como ponto de partida o facto de Teilhard de Chardin ter sido fundamentalmente um homem de ciência, particularmente empenhado nos campos da paleontologia, da geologia e da paleo-antropologia, e cuja perspectiva teológica parte essencialmente da necessidade de reconciliar a evolução (uma das novidades do mundo moderno) com a Igreja. Em torno da sua obra de paleontólogo, Teilhard de Chardin procura pôr sobretudo em evidência a evolução como um movimento em direcção à complexidade e à cerebralização. Teilhard de Chardin investiga não só sobre as linhas filéticas de um grande número de mamíferos fósseis, mas também coloca o problema levantado por novos métodos em biologia evolutiva, sublinhando antes de mais a biologia como ciência do infinitamente complexo e a Biosfera como objecto final de estudo da biologia evolutiva. Mostra-se, assim, de que modo Teilhard de Chardin põe em evidência como característica da evolução esse movimento gigantesco em direcção à complexidade e à consciência, a qual culmina com o aparecimento do ser pensante. Este movimento, porém, não se fica pelo homem, mas prossegue graças à acção da humanidade a caminho do Ponto Ómega. A Terra adquire, deste modo, um novo significado enquanto instrumento que permite completar o caminho da Humanidade em direcção ao Acontecimento da segunda vinda de Cristo. Em Teilhard de Chardin temos, pois, uma posição intelectual cujo objectivo principal é resolver alguns dos problemas colocados pelo evolucionismo darwiniano à teologia, como seja o do sofrimento, de que a vida está profundamente afectada desde os seus inícios. /// Aim of this article is to make a reading of Teilhard de Chardin's work in order to suggest a new model for the relationship between Science and Theology. It departs from the fact that Teilhard de Chardin was a man of science, particularly engaged in the fields of paleontology, geology and the paleo-anthropology. It also takes into consideration the fact that his theological perspective is basically grounded in the necessity of reconciling evolution, one of the novelties of the modern world, and the Church. As a paleontologist, Teilhard de Charding puts into evidence the fact of evolution as a movement in direction to an ever greater process of complexity and brain formation. Teilhard de Chardin's research explores not only thephiletic lines of a great number of fossil mammals, but also places the problem raised by new methods in evolutionary biology, underlining his understanding of biology as a science of the infinitely complex and the Biosphere as the final object of study for evolutionary biology. The article shows in particular how Teilhard de Chardin recognizes as characteristic of evolution a gigantic movement in the direction of complexity and consciousness, in the term of which is the emergence of the thinking being. This movement, however, does not stay with the human being, but evolves due to the action of humankind in direction to the Point Omega. Thus Earth acquires a new meaning, one that makes possible for humankind to progress in the direction of the Event of the Second Coming of Christ. Finally, the article also claims that in Teilhard de Chardin we have a perspective whose objective is the solution of some of the problems that Darwinian evolutionism confronts modern Theology with, as for example the problem of the suffering that so profoundly affects life from its very beginnings.
