Ceteris Paribus Clauses and Causality in Economics
PSA: Proceedings of the Biennial Meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association 1988:308 - 316 (1988)
| Abstract | In this paper I distinguish the kind of ceteris paribus qualifications that often attach to derivative generalizations from those which typically attach to fundamental laws and argue that the latter are typically more tractable. I provide a sketch of a semantics for qualified generalizations and an account of how they may be justified. In addition I argue that legitimate uses of ceteris paribus qualifications must satisfy specific causal conditions. | |||||||||
