Moral animals
| Abstract | Why is there such a thing as value? Those who believe that intrinsic values simply exist – that some things just have the property of being valuable - don’t feel a need to answer that question. But I believe that all value is dependent on the existence of valuing beings. In these lectures, I explore the roots of the good in animal nature and the roots of the right in human nature. I then consider the implications of these accounts for a practical question: if it is human and animal nature that bring value into the world, what if anything does that imply about the way human beings should treat the other animals? | |||||||||
