Abstract

Wittgenstein's philosophy of religion is an answer to the challenge of a scientific worldview which seems to be blind to the problem of meaning of life, the central question of religion. After the failing of the Tractatus – an attempt to deal with the existential question without any possibility of expression – Wittgenstein recognizes the importance of the expressive forms of the traditional religious language. A central means of the investigation is the adoption of Goethe's idea of a proto-phenomena (Urphänomen). It allows Wittgenstein to show the basic features of religion with simple, model-like examples, the language games. Though the application to Christianity remains a torso, Wittgenstein brings out the peculiar pictorial form of the Christian language and the significance of life for its understanding.
